Trump Supports NFL National Anthem Policy, Capitals Shutout Lightning and Advance to Stanley Cup Finals, Celtics Beat Cavs and Lead Series and Jeff Gordon Picked for NASCAR Hall of Fame

President Donald Trump reacted favourably to the NFL’s national anthem policy in an interview with Fox & friends. Yesterday the league announced a unanimous decision among team owners to adopt a policy requiring players and personnel to stand for the national anthem during games. The President said in the interview that “you have to stand proudly for the national anthem” or else “you shouldn’t be playing, you shouldn’t be there, maybe you shouldn’t be in the country”.

The Washington Capitals eliminated the Tampa Bay Lightning with a decisive 4-0 shutout victory last night. Team captain Alexander Ovechkin scored the first goal of the night, followed by two goals by Andre Burakovsky in the second period, and a fourth and final goal by Niklas Backstrom in the third period. Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby made 29 saves, securing his second consecutive shutout. This marks the first time the Capitals have made it to the Stanley Cup Finals since 1998, where they lost to the Detroit Red Wings in just four games. NHL.com quotes Ovechkin on the win:

"I'm emotional right now," Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin said. "We've been waiting for this moment for a long time."

The Boston Celtics reclaimed the lead in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Celtics beat the Cavs 96-83 in Boston, leaving Cleveland one game away from elimination.

Jeff Gordon was elected to the NASCAR Hall of Fame yesterday. It is the 93-Cup winner’s first year of eligibility. NASCAR Wire Service sums up the why Gordon was elected:

“If ever there was a “lock” for the NASCAR Hall of Fame, Gordon fills that role. Winner of 93 Cup points races—third all-time behind Richard Petty (200) and David Pearson (105) and ahead of Darrell Waltrip (84), Bobby Allison (84), Cale Yarborough (83) and Jimmie Johnson (83)—Gordon drove the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet for 797 consecutive races from his debut in 1992 until he bowed out of the ride at the end of the 2015 season.”
