France Heads to World Cup Final, Man City Signs Mahrez for £60 Million, Federer Out at Wimbledon and Sagan Scores Stage 5 Win of Tour de France

France defeated Belgium 1-0 to advance to the FIFA World Cup final yesterday with Samuel Umtiti scoring the headed goal that decided the game. FIFA.com quotes France team reporter Adrien Gingold on the victory:

“France continue their brilliant showing as they avoided falling into Belgium's trap. After the Red Devils had dominated the first half, largely thanks to an awesome Eden Hazard, France took responsibility and controlled the match in the second. Didier Deschamps' team has many faces to it, but they are all smiling now.”

This marks the third time France has made it to the finals at the FIFA World Cup, after only winning the tournament once in 1998 on home soil. They will face either England or Croatia on Sunday, depending on who wins today’s game.

Manchester City has signed Riyad Mahrez for £60 million ($80 million USD) according to a report from the Associated Press. Mahrez previously played for Leicester City and was voted “player of the year” in England in 2016.

“I am so pleased to have joined City, a side playing great football under Pep Guardiola. They’re redefining the English game and I wanted to be a part of it,” Mahrez said on City’s website.

Roger Federer has been eliminated at Wimbledon after losing to South Africa’s Kevin Anderson 2-6, 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-4, 13-11. This will be Anderson’s first Wimbledon semi-final and he will face either Milos Raonic from Canada or John Isner from the United States.

In the Women’s Singles, Serena Williams will face German Julia Goerges on Thursday, and Latvian Jelena Ostapenko will square off against another German Angelique Kerber.

The AP reports that Peter Sagan has won the fifth stage of the Tour de France today, which is the race’s first hilly stage. This marks Sagan’s second victory of the race.
