Trump Supports NFL National Anthem Policy, Capitals Shutout Lightning and Advance to Stanley Cup Finals, Celtics Beat Cavs and Lead Series and Jeff Gordon Picked for NASCAR Hall of Fame

President Donald Trump reacted favourably to the NFL’s national anthem policy in an interview with Fox & friends. Yesterday the league announced a unanimous decision among team owners to adopt a policy requiring players and personnel to stand for the national anthem during games. The President said in the interview that “you have to stand proudly for the national anthem” or else “you shouldn’t be playing, you shouldn’t be there, maybe you shouldn’t be in the country”.

The Washington Capitals eliminated the Tampa Bay Lightning with a decisive 4-0 shutout victory last night. Team captain Alexander Ovechkin scored the first goal of the night, followed by two goals by Andre Burakovsky in the second period, and a fourth and final goal by Niklas Backstrom in the third period. Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby made 29 saves, securing his second consecutive shutout. This marks the first time the Capitals have made it to the Stanley Cup Finals since 1998, where they lost to the Detroit Red Wings in just four games. NHL.com quotes Ovechkin on the win:

"I'm emotional right now," Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin said. "We've been waiting for this moment for a long time."

The Boston Celtics reclaimed the lead in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Celtics beat the Cavs 96-83 in Boston, leaving Cleveland one game away from elimination.

Jeff Gordon was elected to the NASCAR Hall of Fame yesterday. It is the 93-Cup winner’s first year of eligibility. NASCAR Wire Service sums up the why Gordon was elected:

“If ever there was a “lock” for the NASCAR Hall of Fame, Gordon fills that role. Winner of 93 Cup points races—third all-time behind Richard Petty (200) and David Pearson (105) and ahead of Darrell Waltrip (84), Bobby Allison (84), Cale Yarborough (83) and Jimmie Johnson (83)—Gordon drove the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet for 797 consecutive races from his debut in 1992 until he bowed out of the ride at the end of the 2015 season.”

NFL Adopts National Anthem Policy and League Approves Panthers Purchase, Rockets Tie Up Series with Warriors and ESPN Secures Deal with UFC

All 32 NFL team owners have approved a new policy requiring players to stand for the national anthem. Teams are subject to a fine if players or personnel on the field do not stand, and teams can then fine individual players or personnel for the infraction. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement:

“This season, all league and team personnel shall stand and show respect for the flag and the Anthem. Personnel who choose not to stand for the Anthem may stay in the locker room until after the Anthem has been performed.”

The NFL has unanimously approved hedge fund manager David Tepper’s $2.2 billion USD purchase of the Carolina Panthers. The AP reports that despite implying a possible relocation of the team to another city in the Carolinas, Tepper affirmed they would stay in Charlotte.

“There is a logical place for this team, and it’s Charlotte.”

The Houston Rockets tied up their series with the Golden State Warriors last night, securing a narrow victory of 95-93. Factors in the win were James Harden’s scoring 30 points the team’s impressive defence as praised by coach Mike D’Antoni, quoted in the Associated Press:

“I thought this is the highest level we’ve ever played defensively, without a doubt,” Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni said, “because we’re talking about the best offensive team ever.”

ESPN reports that they have agreed to a five-year deal with the UFC, bringing “the mixed-martial arts league's entire rights package” to the network in 2019.

“The deal consists of 30 UFC Fight Night events per year, including 10 main cards on ESPN's television networks. The other 20 will stream on ESPN+, the company's newly launched streaming service.”

#PlaybyPlay; #Cavs Tie Up Series, Capitals Defeat Lightning with Shutout and #NFL Prepared for Legal Betting

Cavs Tie Up Series, Capitals Defeat Lightning with Shutout and NFL Prepared for Legal Betting

The Cav tied up the Eastern Conference Finals with the Celtics in Cleveland last night with a 111-102 win. LeBron James, who scored 44 points in the game to secure victory, is quoted in the Associated Press commenting on the fifth game of the series in Boston on Wednesday:

“We know it’s going to be a hostile environment. We know their fans are going to be very energetic. But we have to just have our same mindset we had when we came home for these two games. If our minds are there, we put ourselves in a position to be victorious.”

The NHL’s Eastern Conference Final has also been tied up as the Washington Capitals defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-0 forcing Game 7. There were no goals in the first period, but the Capitals would go on to score once in the second and twice in the third, with right winger T.J. Oshie scoring twice. A key factor in Washington’s win was goalie Braden Holtby’s 24 saves to shut the Lightning out. Capitals right winger Devante Smith-Pelly is quoted on NHL.com praising the netminder:

“"It's a perfect time," Smith-Pelly said of Holtby's first shutout since April 5, 2017. "He's been great all year. Obviously an up-and-down year for him personally, but the way he's bounced back, he's been amazing all throughout the playoffs, and really, really happy for him."”

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell “said the NFL had spent time planning for expanded legal sports betting, "including substantial education and compliance trainings for our clubs, players, employees and partners,"” according to ESPN.

"These efforts include supporting common sense legislation that protects our players, coaches and fans and maintains public confidence in our games," Goodell said in the statement. "We are asking Congress to enact uniform standards for the states that choose to legalized sports betting that include, at a minimum, four core principles:
"1. There must be substantial consumer protections; 2. Sports leagues can protect our content and intellectual property from those who attempt to steal or misuse it; 3. Fans will have access to official, reliable league data; and 4. Law enforcement will have the resources, monitoring and enforcement tools necessary to protect our fans and penalize bad actors here and abroad."
The piece also indicates that unlike other major sports leagues in the U.S., the NFL does not seek a cut of sports betting profits.

Justify Wins Preakness, Vegas Eliminates Jets, Cavs Break Deficit, Warriors Retake Series Lead and Harvick Wins NASCAR All-Star Race

Justify won the 143rd Preakness Stakes on Saturday on a foggy track at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. Leading for most of the race, Justify fought off tough competition flanked by Good Magic and Bravazo to win by a half-length. This follows Justify’s win at the Kentucky Derby and represents the second leg of the Triple Crown. The final race to secure the Triple Crown will be the Belmont Stakes on June 9 at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. Only 12 horses have won the Triple Crown in its 99-year history, the last being American Pharoah in 2015.

Over the weekend the Las Vegas Golden Knights made short work of the Winnipeg Jets, routing them on Friday and taking the Western Conference Finals last night. In Game Five in Winnipeg last night, both teams made 32 shots but the Jets could only muster one goal falling short to the Golden Knights in a 2-1 loss. In only letting in a single goal last night, many attribute Vegas goalie Marc-Andre Fleury’s performance for much of the team’s success. NHL.com quotes Knights defenseman Nate Schmidt:

"He's showing us the way home," said defenseman Nate Schmidt, who called Fleury the "line leader" of the team. "Hey, the guy has won a couple of Stanley Cups, but it may not have been the way he wanted to do it the last couple of years. For him to be back here, it shows how great of a teammate he is and why our guys love playing in front of him."

On Saturday the Tampa Bay Lightning took the series lead with a 3-2 win over the Washington Capitals. Washington faces a possible elimination in their hometown game tonight, which would pit the Lightning against the Knights for the Stanley Cup final.

In NBA news, the Cavs broke out of their two-game deficit with a 116-86 victory over the Celtics on Saturday in Cleveland. Cleveland has a chance to tie the series up 2-2 tonight. Golden State regained the series dominance over the Houston Rockets with a 126-85 in Oakland.

Kevin Harvick won the Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star Race on Saturday. NASCAR Wire Service reports:

“Harvick’s No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford was still the strongest car in the field, and the driver who already has five points wins this season added another in the marquee exhibition race, taking control of the event with an overtime surge at the end of the 20-lap third stage and sealing the victory by outrunning Daniel Suarez in the final two-lap drag race to the finish.”

Esports Entertainment Group Signs Agreement with 14 Teams, Huami Reports Financials and US Physical Therapy to Present at Healthcare Conference
