Quintana takes Grueling Stage 17 at Tour de France, Cavs Sign Love to 4-Year Extension Worth $120 Million and Mets’ Cespedes Off for 8-10 Months for Heel Surgery

Colombian rider Nairo Quintana took stage 17 of the Tour de France today, his first win of this year’s race, according to a report on ESPN. The 65 km stage, ending at Saint-Lary-Soulan, though being the shortest of the Tour so far this century, is very grueling and features three category one climbs. The stage win puts Quintana at number five overall. Still in first place overall is Welsh rider Geraint Thomas, who came in third today.

The Cleveland Cavaliers signed All-Star Kevin Love to a four-year $120 million extension, according to the Associated Press. Love sported a hard hat as he signed the contract in front of dozens of construction workers at the Cavs’ Quicken Loans Arena, which is undergoing a $140 million renovation. Love addressed the uncertainties around his status with the team and expressed gratitude for signing the extension.

“I look back, everything happens for a reason,” Love said. “My best friend from back home said, ‘It always works out.’ This is where I wanted to be. I’ve said that all along. There were some tough times where potentially I would have been traded and my name came up in rumors every few months. But hopefully that ends now.”

New York Mets’ outfielder Yoenis Cespedes will be out of play for at least 8 to 10 months to undergo surgery on both heels, according to a report on Newsday. The two-time All Star needs the surgery to repair calcification around his Achilles tendons. John Ricco, one of the Mets’ three acting general managers, said Cespedes’ condition was contributing to other issues as well.

“The concern on our end was not only the pain he was in, but also the fact that it was contributing to him altering his running style and therefore, leading to some of these other leg issues,” Ricco said. “And you get to the point where that doesn’t make any sense because you’re going to stay in that cycle.”

Take-Two’s 2K Announced Wooooo! Edition of WWE® 2K19 Celebrating Ric Flair and lululemon Appoints New CEO

Take-Two Interactive Software Inc.’s (NasdaqGS:TTWO) 2K has announced the Wooooo! Edition of WWE® 2K19 in honour of 16-time WWE World Champion Ric Flair.

Wooooo!”

lululemon athletica, inc. (NasdaqGS:LULU) has appointed Calvin McDonald as Chief Executive Officer, effective August 20, 2018. Previously, Mcdonald served as President and CEO of Americas for Sephora.

Tour de France Riders Caught in Tear Gas, FIFA Best Men’s Players Shortlist Announced, Ryder Cup Captain Furyk Ambivalent About Woods and Swimmer Ryan Lochte Banned from Competition

Riders in the Tour de France were affected with tear gas today, according to a report in the Associated Press. Bales of hay obstructed the road 30km into the 218km stage 16, as protesting farmers demonstrated against the reduction of European Union funding. To disperse the protesters, police fired tear gas which riders Chris Froome, Geraint Thomas and Peter Sagan had the misfortune of passing through as they rode. French cyclist Julian Alaphilippe went on to win the stage, his second of this year’s Tour.

BBC Sport reports the 10-man shortlist for the Best FIFA Men's Player award for 2018:

''I'm going to handle him the way I do everyone else,'' Furyk said Monday before boarding a flight for the Canadian Open. ''I'll ask my top eight guys. The way he's playing, he might be one of them. I'll ask the vice captains, collectively, and I think we'll do the best we can to round out the team. We want the guys playing the best.''

U.S. swimming star Ryan Lochte has been banned from competition until July 2019 by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, according to the AP. Lochte and his wife got intravenous vitamin injections to bolster their immune systems in May, which they posted on social media, and because the dosage exceeded 100 millilitres, it broke anti-doping rules. Kisner Leads Round One at the Open, Sagan Wins Stage 13 at Tour but Thomas Maintains Lead, NFL Anthem Policy Suspended and AC Milan Ruled Back in the Europa League

The Express reports that Kevin Kisner finished first, shooting five-under par with 66 in round one of The Open 2018 at Carnoustie. Erik van Rooyen, Tony Finau and Zander Lombard all trailed by one shot and Tiger Woods, who hasn’t played the British Open since 2015, finished five shots behind.

Round two is still in play at press time, but so far Kevin Kisner holds on to the lead with Zach Johnson according to the leaderboard at The Open.

Slovak cyclist Peter Sagan has won stage 13 at the Tour de France, his third of this year’s race, according to BBC Sport. Sagan edged out riders Alexander Kristoff of Norway and  Frenchman Arnaud Demare.

"This stage was a piece of gold for us," said Sagan. "Everyone in the group recovered and I think everyone is happy it was a relaxed stage. I was a bit late, a little bit behind in the last 600m but I stayed on the wheel of Kristoff and I'm very happy to beat them."

British riders Geraint Thomas and Chris Froome of Team Sky still hold the number one and two positions overall, respectively.

The NFL’s national anthem policy from May, which forbade players and staff from “taking a knee” while the Star-Spangled Banner was being played, is no longer in effect, according to the Washington Post. The decision is a result of dialogue between the NFL and the NFL Players Association (NFLPA). The two released a joint statement which read:

“The NFL and NFLPA, through recent discussions, have been working on a resolution to the anthem issue. In order to allow this constructive dialogue to continue, we have come to a standstill agreement on the NFLPA’s grievance and on the NFL’s anthem policy. No new rules relating to the anthem will be issued or enforced for the next several weeks while these confidential discussions are ongoing.”

The Court for Arbitration of Sport has ruled that AC Milan is back in the Europa League after having been banned for overspending, according to the Associated Press. The Court conceded that the Union of European Football Association (UEFA), who banned AC Milan, were right in judging that the seven-time European champion team had overspent, but that the punishment was “not proportionate”.

2018 Open Starts Today, Geraint Thomas Takes Stage 12, Extends Lead at Tour de France, Kazakh Figure Skater Denis Ten Stabbed to Death and Dodgers Acquire Machado in Trade

The 2018 Open Championship at Carnoustie Golf Links in Angus, Scotland kicked off today. Round one has so far seen Tiger Woods starting off strong with multiple birdies but at press time has just scored an unexpected close-range bogey on the 13th green. 2017 Open winner Jordan Spieth was three under par and within two strokes of the lead as he began the 15th hole, but a series of miscalculations left him finishing +1. Kevin Kisner currently tops the leaderboard with a -5.

Welsh cyclist Geraint Thomas won his second consecutive stage at the Tour de France, taking stage 12 on Alpe d'Huez today. Thomas is the first Briton to win a stage on Alpe d’Huez and the first man to win while wearing a yellow jersey, according to a report in the Telegraph. Thomas, who is currently leading the race for Team Sky, commented on the stage 12 victory:

"Not even in my wildest dreams did I think I would win on here," Thomas said. "It's one of those things that will stay with me for the rest of my life."

Kazakh figure skater, Denis Ten, who won a bronze medal at Sochi 2014, died in a hospital after being stabbed by two men trying to steal his car mirrors, according to CNN. Writing on Twitter, American skater Adam Rippon paid tribute to Ten:

My skating friend, @Tenis_Den, passed away today. He was so kind to everyone and a huge inspiration to me and so many other people. Murdered in the streets of Kazakhstan. Denis, thank you for showing us how to be a champion. Your time with us was way too short. Love you forever.

ESPN reports that the Los Angeles Dodgers acquired All-Star Manny Machado from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for five prospects last night. Dan Duquette, the Orioles’ executive vice president of baseball operations commented on the trade:

"Obviously, it's a bittersweet day for our organization. We watched Manny grow up in our franchise the past eight years. We all know what an exceptional talent he is, from the great plays that he made to his elite hitting. He's always going to be an important part of our club's history."

The five prospects the Orioles get in return are: outfielder Yusniel Diaz, right-hander Dean Kremer, third baseman Rylan Bannon, righty Zach Pop and third baseman Breyvic Valera.

Comcast Gives Up Bid For Fox Assets, Clears Way for Disney and Sportsman’s Warehouse Announces Second Public Offering

Stocks discussed: (NasdaqGS:CMCSA) (NasdaqGS:FOXA) (NYSE:DIS) (NasdaqGS:SPWH)

Comcast Corporation (NasdaqGS:CMCSA) has issued a statement announcing that it “does not intend to pursue further the acquisition of the Twenty-First Century Fox (NasdaqGS:FOXA) assets”. This clears the way for The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) to pursue the acquisition without dueling with Comcast.

Sportsman’s Warehouse (NasadqGS:SPWH) has announced a second public offering of 2,822,652 shares that are being sold by its stockholders, Seidler Equity Partners III, L.P. and SK Capital Holdings, L.P.
