Eagles Coach was ‘Looking Forward’ to White House Visit, LeBron James and Steph Curry Don’t Want Invitation, Argentina Cancels Exhibition Match with Israel in Response to Protest and Delaware Legalizes Full-Scale Betting

Philadelphia Eagles coach Doug Pederson expressed disappointment at President Trump’s cancellation of the team’s planned White House visit yesterday. The Associated Press quotes Pederson:

“I was looking forward to going down, obviously,” Pederson said Wednesday. “We did something last season that was very special, a milestone in the city of Philadelphia and for our organization. I was looking forward to being recognized as world champions. It is what it is.”

The AP also reports that Stephen Curry and LeBron James would not be interested in a White House visit in response to the President’s decision. Curry refused Trump’s invitation last year when the Golden State Warriors won the NBA championship. LeBron James was unsurprised by the White House’s move and expressed the lack of interest in attending even if invited.

“I’m not surprised. It’s typical of him,” James, the Cleveland star, said Tuesday of Trump’s decision to cancel. “I know no matter who wins this series, no one wants the invite anyway. So it won’t be Golden State or Cleveland going.”

Argentina has cancelled a pre-World Cup warm-up game with Israel following political agitation, according to CNN. The report says Argentinian President Mauricio Macri describes Argentina’s decision as being done “in solidarity” with superstar player Lionel Messi, who was singled out by Palestinian protesters.

Palestinian officials were outraged by the decision to hold the match in the contested city. On Sunday, Palestinian Football Association chief Jibril Rajoub launched a campaign against the Argentine Football Association (AFA) -- and specifically Messi -- and called on people to burn T-shirts of the soccer player.

Yesterday Delaware became the first state to legalize full-scale sports betting. NPR reports that state’s Gov. John Carney was the first to make a bet, placing $10 on the Phillies game last night, who then beat the Cubs 6-1.

Trump Cancels Eagles’ White House Visit, Capitals Within One Win of Stanley Cup and 131-Year-Old Rawlings Sporting Goods Being Sold for $395 Million USD

President Donald Trump has cancelled the Philadelphia Eagles’ planned White House visit to honour their Super Bowl victory. The cancellation was made in a statement by the White House yesterday, and cited the Eagles’ disagreement "with their President because he insists that they proudly stand for the National Anthem, hand on heart, in honor of the great men and women of our military and the people of our country."

Instead, the White House will host “A Celebration of America”, and will “honor our great country, pay tribute to the heroes who fight to protect it, and loudly and proudly play the National Anthem,” according to ESPN.

The Washington Capitals are now one game away from eliminating the Las Vegas Golden Knights and winning the Stanley Cup after a stunning Game 4 victory last night. The Capitals got down to business early, scoring three goals in the first period, one more in the second and denying Vegas any until the third. Vegas scored two in the first half of the final period, but it was too late and too little as the Capitals matched them with two more goals in the final 10 minutes, making for a crushing 6-2 win. NHL.com quotes Vegas coach Gerard Gallant:

"They had six goals, they had three power-play goals and made some real nice plays, but we played a lot of the game the way we wanted to play,"

Though the Golden Knights have the home ice advantage for Game 5, NHL.com points out that “teams that have a 3-1 lead in the Cup Final have won the series 32 of 33 times.”

According to a report in the Associated Press, Rawlings Sporting Goods Co. is being sold to a private equity fund for $395 million USD. The 131-year-old company, is being sold by Newell Brands Inc. (NYSE:NWL) so it can “better focus on its core brands” including Sharpie, Calphalon and Rubbermaid.

Warriors Lead Finals 2-0, Capitals Subdue Golden Knights and Williams Drops Out of French Open

Last night the Golden State Warriors consolidated their series lead against the Cleveland Cavaliers with a 122-103 victory at home. Steph Curry stood out in the game, scoring 33 points for the Warriors and hitting an NBA Finals record of nine 3-point shots. The Associated Press quotes Curry on the night:

"Pretty special night. And hopefully some more special things happen and we get two more wins."

LeBron James said that with Game 3 in Cleveland on Wednesday, the Cavs need to avoid complacency:

"We want to continue to be uncomfortable. Just because we're going home doesn't mean we can relax."

On Saturday night the Washington Capitals took the series lead against the Golden Knights with a 3-1 victory in D.C. With no goals in the first period, the Capitals took charge in the second with a goal each from team captain Alex Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov. Goalie Braden Holtby made 21 saves, only letting one goal from Vegas’ Tomas Nosek before the Capitals’ Devante Smith-Pelly scored a third and final goal. NHL.com quotes Golden Knights goalie Marc-Andre Fleury and forward Ryan Reaves on the loss:

"It doesn't mean we're out of it," Fleury said. "We still have a lot of minutes to be played, a lot of periods. Got a lot of time to put ourselves back in the series."

"You can live with the losses if you're just not getting the bounces, but the way we played isn't good enough for this time of year," Vegas forward Ryan Reaves said.

Serena Williams has pulled out of her much-anticipated fourth round match in the French Open with Maria Sharapova due to a chest muscle injury according to the AP. In a press conference Willams cited her inability to serve as proof that she needs to drop out and recover.

“The fact that I physically can’t serve at all is a good indication that maybe I should just go back to the drawing board and stay positive. And try to get better and not get it to a point where it could be a lot worse.”

Cavs Lose in OT Despite LeBron’s Record-Breaking Night, Senators Assistant GM Arrested and Williams Makes Comeback at French Open

The Golden State Warriors won a shocking overtime victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers last night taking the first win of the series. Despite LeBron James scoring the first 50-point finals game since Michael Jordan in 1993, the team still lost 124-114 in OT. Many attribute the Cavs failure to win in regulation to J.R. Smith’s dribbling out the final seconds in the game. Cleveland coach Tyronn Lue said Smith thought the team was leading, which was why he dribbling out the clock. However ESPN quotes Smith:

"No, I knew we were tied. It's just, I thought we were going to take a timeout because I got the rebound. I'm pretty sure everybody didn't think I was going to shoot it over KD right there. ... I mean, I saw KD standing right next to me. He already had, what, four blocks? So I wasn't trying to be the fifth."

Despite walking out of a press conference after the game due to repeated questions about Smith, James affirmed his loyalty to him and the team.

"We got to move on. This game is over and done with. We had opportunities. I would never give up on JR. That's not my M.O. I don't give up on any of my players, any of my teammates, so I don't think that even needs to be said."

Ottawa Senators assistant general manager Randy Lee has been arrested for harassment according to a report in the Associated Press. The arrest occurred last night “following an altercation that occurred during a shuttle bus ride back to his Buffalo hotel.

Serena Williams is advancing to the third round of the French Open in what is being described as a “comeback” in the AP. Despite losing her first set with 17th-seeded Ashleigh Barty of Australia 3-6, Williams came back to win the following two 6-3 and 6-4.

“I lost the first set, and I thought, ‘I’ve got to try harder. I’ve got to just try harder,’ she told the crowd afterward. “And Serena came out.”
