Williams and Federer Advance to Wimbledon Quarter-Finals, Sei Young Kim Shatters LPGA Record,

Sagan Wins Stage 2 of Tour de France, Bulls Match $78 Million Contract for Zach Lavine, Vettel Wins British GP and Jones Scores First Cup at Daytona

Serena Williams has reached her 13th quarter-final at Wimbledon after beating Russian player Evgeniya Rodina 6-4, 6-2 today. The AP quotes Williams on the win:

“It was tougher than the scoreline,” Williams said. “I knew we were both moms, and I’m not sure how often that’s happened, if ever. So it’s really cool. You can be a mom, you can still play tennis and you can still be great.”

Eight-time champion Roger Federer also advanced to the quarter-finals with a 6-0, 7-5, 6-4 win over France’s Adrian Mannarino. This marks Federer’s 32nd consecutive set win at Wimbledon, two fewer than his personal record of 34 between the third round in 2005 and the final in 2006.

Sei Young Kim won the Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic shooting 31-under 257 and shattering LPGA records. According to LPGA.com, Kim’s performance at Thornberry Creek broke the 72-hole scoring record, “which she previously owned along with Annika Sorenstam, who totaled a 27-under in 2001.”

The 2018 Tour de France kicked off on Saturday and Slovakian rider Peter Sagan won Stage 2 yesterday. Sagan was disqualified last year after officials ruled that he had caused a crash which broke Mark Cavendish’s shoulder, according to the Associated Press. Sagan is not bitter about the incident, however, and expressed gratitude to be back in the race.

“Revenge? I already forgot about last year,” Sagan said. “I’m just happy I can be in the Tour de France, the biggest race in the world.”

The Chicago Bulls matched a $78 million offer that the Sacramento Kings had offered restricted free agent Zach LaVine on Sunday, ESPN reports. With Lavine missing 91 out of a possible 162 games in the past two seasons, the 23-year-old assured those who may be critical of his re-signing that he would prove his value to the Bulls.

"At the end of the day, I believe in myself, I believe in my work, and I'm going to show the city of Chicago it's a good choice and I'm here to stay. I'm going to be their guy, and I'm ready to do whatever to help this team get back to that spot."

Sebastian Vettel won the British Grand Prix on Saturday. The German driver beat out British rival Lewis Hamilton, and tied Alan Proist for the third highest amount of wins at 51.

22-year-old Erik Jones scored his first NASCAR Cup Series victory at the Daytona International Speedway on Saturday.

July 6 Play by Play – the latest sports headlines, esports and sports stock news

France Advances to Semi-Finals of World Cup, Venus Out at Wimbledon but Serena Heading to Round 4 and Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods Plan $10 Million Match

France became the first team to secure a spot in the semi-finals at the 2018 FIFA World Cup today, with a 2-0 victory over Uruguay. Antoine Griezmann scored the game-winning goal despite the ball initially hitting Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera. This win makes France only the fourth team to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup on six different occasions, along with Germany, Italy and Brazil. FIFA.com quotes France coach Didier Deschamps on the win:

"I think we deserved the result, we played against a beautiful Uruguayan side but we were better than they were today. I have a younger team, and they’ve already played as a team before, but today’s requirements were even higher because the opponents become better as you progress.

Five-time champion Venus Williams lost her third round at Wimbledon to Dutch player Kiki Bertens. The number 20 seeded Bertens match win (6-2, 6-7 (5), 8-6) marks the first time she’d advance to the fourth round. Wimbledon.com quotes Bertens on the victory:

“I can still not really believe it,” she said. “It was such a tough match and such a big fight. It was tough because I played her in Miami and had a few match points and I lost. Of course that was going through my mind sometimes. But I was like – OK, keep on going for it. This is Wimbledon, third round, you’ve never reached the fourth round before so you’ve nothing to lose so just keep going for your shots.

Elsewhere in the tournament Venus’s sister Serena did, however, win a 7-5, 7-6 (2) victory over France’s Kristina Mladenovic to advance to the fourth round.

Golf.com reports that Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are planning a $10 million winner-take-all match. The match was initially planned for July 3rd in Las Vegas as a prime-time TV special but never came to fruition. Mickelson confirmed that they were “working on a different date”. Mickelson commented further on his growing friendship with Woods:

"As we've developed a good relationship, we've started to collaborate on some other things that have allowed us to achieve things that we couldn't do on our own. Like this match. I couldn't do it on my own. He couldn't do it on his own. But together, we're [trying] to create something pretty special."

Dorel Industries’ GT Bicycles Introduces New Versions of Force and Sensor Bikes and WWE to Host Conference Call on Second Quarter 2018 Financials

Dorel Industries, Inc.’s (TSX:DII-B.TO) premium brand GT Bicycles introduced new versions of its all-mountain and trail bike platforms Force and Sensor.

"These bikes were designed around our updated LTS platform without using any proprietary components," said Cait Dooley, GT Bicycles Global Director of Product. "This allows riders to choose how they want their bike to perform whether they're racing on the Force or hitting their home trails on the Sensor."

World Wrestling Entertainment (NYSE:WWE) announced that its second quarter 2018 financial results will be reported on July 26 in a conference call with Chairman and CEO Vincent K. McMahon and Co-Presidents, George A. Barrios and Michelle D. Wilson. The call is set for 11:00 a.m. ET.

Halep and Nadal Advance to Round 3 at Wimbledon, England Reaches Quarter-Finals in World Cup and Holloway Drops Out of Title Defence at UFC 226

Simona Halep, the top-ranked seed of the ladies’ singles, beat Saisai Zheng in the second round of Wimbledon. Winning 10 games in a row, the Romanian French Open-winner avoided the fate of three of the top five seeds in the ladies’ singles who had been defeated in the first two rounds. BBC Sport quotes Halep on how she beat Zheng:

"I stopped missing and tried putting less power on the shot to make her run,” she said. "I just have to fight for every point."

Fellow French Open-winner Rafael Nadal secured a 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 victory against Kazakhstan player Mikhail Kukushkin. Wimbledon.com quotes Nadal on the match:

“He was very tough,” the three-time Wimbledon champion said as he left court. “He plays very well on grass, with the ball coming very low all the time. But I played much better in this match than in the first round, which was important for me.

England beat out Colombia in the last game of the Round of 16 to reach the quarter-finals. The game ended with the score tied at 1-1 but England won on penalties. FIFA.com quotes England’s team reporter Laure James on the victory:

“From Jordan Pickford, who made a name for himself, to Eric Dier, who scored the decisive penalty, no member of Gareth Southgate’s team will ever forget this night. The coach can be proud of his players, who implemented their game plan and showed an irrepressible will to win. England will return to their base in Repino to work on closing out matches, but for now they can enjoy their first victory in a knockout game for 12 years.”

UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway has dropped out of his title defence fight against Brian Ortega at UFC 226 this weekend according to a report from the Associated Press. Holloway’s management team made the announcement last night citing “concussion symptoms”.

“Max fought with his team to continue with the fight,” the statement said. “He showed some improvement (from Tuesday to Wednesday) but was still showing obvious symptoms. After open workouts he crashed and was very hard to wake up. When he did, he had flashing vision and slurred speech.”

World Cup Quarter-finals Take Shape, DeMarcus Cousins Signs with Golden State Giving Warriors 5 All-Star Lineup and South Korean Basketball Players Arrive in Pyongyang

Only European and South American teams have advanced past the Round of 16 portion of the Knockout Phase to the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup. Notably tournament host Russia beat Spain on July 1 in a 1-1 win on penalties. FIFA.com quotes Spain’s team reporter Antia Andre on the loss:

“Spain deserved more from the 120 minutes. They controlled the game from the start but hard work by the Russian defenders made their job incredibly difficult. Despite the good first half for La Roja with the own goal, the penalty changed things. Andres Iniesta's introduction also altered the pattern of play, with Spain looking more confident after his entrance. De Gea could not keep out the Russians, while Koke and Aspas were unsuccessful from the spot.”

The quarter-finals of the World Cup begin on July 6 with Uruguay vs France and Brazil vs Belgium, and on July 7 Russia faces Croatia and Sweden plays either England or Colombia.

DeMarcus Cousins has signed a one-year, $5.3 million USD contract with NBA champions the Golden State Warriors. According to CBS Sports, Cousins is currently recovering from an Achilles injury and won’t be able to play until December. Once on the court, however, Cousins’ addition to the team gives them a five All-Star starting lineup.

This follows news that LeBron James has signed a four-year, $153.3 million USD deal with the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Associated Press reports that 50 South Korean basketball players arrived yesterday in Pyongyang for a series of games the two countries have planned.

The South Korean male and female basketball players are expected to play four matches with North Koreans on Wednesday and Thursday. It was not clear whether North Korean leader Kim Jong Un would attend any of the games, but he did make a prominent appearance at a concert put on by South Korean musicians in Pyongyang earlier this year.
