Justin Thomas Wins Bridgestone Invitational, Georgia Hall Wins Women’s British Open, Zverev Scores Second Consecutive Victory at Citi Open and Kuznetsova Wins in a Comeback

Justin Thomas won his first World Golf Championship game at the 2018 Bridgestone Invitational on Sunday, finishing with 15 under par. Runner-up Kyle Stanley trailed four with an 11 under par finish. Thomas told CBS Sports what winning with his grandparents present meant to him:

"I'm glad I finally played well around here, just in time for it to leave. I got a little choked up when I saw grandma and grandpa over there. It's really cool. They don't get to come out very often anymore. This is my first PGA Tour win with them here, so it's pretty cool."

English golfer Georgia Hall won the Women’s British Open with 17 under par, beating Pornanong Phatlum from Thailand by two shots. Hall told BBC Sport that she would like to inspire young girls to take up golf:

"I couldn't believe so many young girls and boys were watching me, wanting a picture or an autograph," she said. "Hopefully I can encourage a lot of young girls out there to take up the game. I want to be a good role model for young girls in Britain."

Alexander Zverev won his second consecutive Citi Open title on Sunday, beating Alex de Minaur 6-2, 6-4 in the final. Zverev is the first to win back-to-back titles at the Citi Open since Juan Martin del Potro in 2008 and 2009. The Associated Press quotes the tournament’s co-founder and chairman Donald Dell on Zverev:

“Sascha Zverev is the future of pro tennis,” said tournament co-founder and chairman Donald Dell, using Zverev’s nickname. “He’s chasing Federer and Nadal for the No. 1 spot.”

Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova won the women’s singles title, defeating Croatian Donna Vekic in a comeback. Kuznetsova lost the opening set 6-4 to Vekic, but scored a tie-break victory in the second set before winning 6-2 in the final.

Poulter Takes Round One at Firestone, Woods and Mickelson to Play Exhibition 1 on 1 Thanksgiving Weekend, Wie Leads Round One of Women’s British Open and Alexander Zverev Beats Brother Mischa at Washington Open

English golfer Ian Poulter led round one of the Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone yesterday, finishing with 8 under par, according to PGATour.com. Rickie Fowler is right behind Poulter with 7 under par and pre-tournament favourite Dustin Johnson, who recently won the Canadian Open, finished the day with just 1 under par. Tiger Woods scored his best opening round of the year so far, with 4 under par. The AP quotes Woods on his performance:

“If you would have offered me this at the start of the day, I would have snapped your arm for it,” he said. “Yeah, we can be greedy and say I’d love to have holed that putt on 8 to have tied the record. But 8 under par’s a pretty decent round for me around this golf course.”

Woods and Phil Mickelson look to be having their head-to-head televised exhibition match on Thanksgiving weekend, according to CNN. Mickelson confirmed the rough date for the $10 million match at the Bridgestone Invitational yesterday.

"As we firm up more and more details we'll let everybody know, but right now we know it's going to be Thanksgiving weekend for sure,” he said.

LPGA.com reports that American Michelle Wie finished in the lead with 8 under par at the Women’s British Open first round yesterday. Just trailing Wie in round one was South Korean In-Kyung Kim with 7 under par and American Lindy Duncan with 6 under par.

“I had a lot of fun out there today. The views were just so spectacular here, you kind of get lost in the view sometimes,” Wie said about the morning’s idyllic conditions. “I’m really proud of myself how I took advantage of conditions this morning.”

German Alexander Zverev beat his brother Mischa 6-3, 7-5 at the Washington Open yesterday to advance to the quarter-finals. The Associated Press quotes Mischa on losing to his younger sibling:

“A lot of different feelings. First of all, happiness; I was proud. When we were at the coin toss and then took the picture and I walked back to the baseline, I had to, like, a little bit fight my tears, because I felt like, ’It just finally came true,’” said Mischa, who turns 31 in a few weeks, while Alexander is 21. “Because we’ve been playing against each other in the backyard in our mini-tennis court and imagining that we would play against each other, like, in a Grand Slam final.”

MLB Trade Deadline Ends, Williams Out in Surprising Loss at Stanford Classic, Wawrinka’s Comeback Falters with Loss at Washington Open and Digne Signs with Everton

The MLB trade deadline ended yesterday. Some significant transactions on the last day include the Atlanta Braves acquisition of Kevin Gausman from the Baltimore Orioles, the Pittsburgh Pirates’ acquisition of Chris Archer from the Tampa Bay Rays and the Los Angeles Dodgers acquisition of Brian Dozier from the Minnesota Twins.

Serena Williams shocked viewers with an uncharacteristic defeat in her opening match of the Stanford Classic, sponsored by Mubadala Investment Company, last night according to the Associated Press. British player Johanna Konta beat the 23 Grand Slam-winning Williams 6-1, 6-0.

“I know I can play a zillion times better so that kind of helps out, too. I have so many things on my mind I don’t have time to be shocked about a loss that clearly wasn’t at my best right now,” Williams said. “When I was out there, was fighting. That’s the only thing I can say, I wasn’t just like giving it away and I was moving a lot better. So I’m just trying to take the positives out of it.”

Former #3 in the world tennis star Stan Wawrinka lost 4-6 7-6 6-7 loss to American Donald Young at the Washington Open yesterday, the AP reports. Wawrinka is struggling in a comeback year after going through knee surgery in 2017.

“I was missing a lot. Not feeling the way I wanted. I’m looking for confidence, for sure. It’s tough to not win a lot of matches. Then you start to think too much on the court.”

BBC Sport reports that Lucas Digne has been signed by Everton from Barcelona for a five-year deal worth £18 million. The 25-year-old Digne will be playing in his fourth country in the last three years having previously played in France for Paris Saint-Germain and Italy for Roma.

"Everton is a big club with a great history. I want to play games, win games and excite the fans with the quality of our football," Digne said."I want to show my best football here and discover the best league in the world. Everybody loves the Premier League. I am loving the fact I am coming here.”

Callaway Golf Declares Quarterly Cash Dividend and Millenial Esports Names Stephen Shoemaker as CEO

Stocks discussed: (NYSE:ELY) (TSX:GAME.V)

Callaway Golf (NYSE:ELY) has declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.01 per share on its Common Stock payable on September 4, 2018.
