Argentina Suffers 3-0 Loss to Croatia, Capitals’ Cup-Winning Coach Barry Trotz Hired by Islanders, Rhode Island Signs Sports Betting Budget and Boris Becker’s Passport Accused of Being Fake

Yesterday Argentina suffered a 3-0 loss to Croatia yesterday as Lionel Messi’s team failed to secure a win in their second game. Argentina’s team reporter Diego Zandrino is quoted on the loss on FIFA.com:

A nightmare! That is what the match became for an Argentina side that lacked both the invention and the desire to turn their night around after falling behind to a costly goalkeeping error. Their hopes of reaching the knockout phase are now hanging by a thread.

Brazil beat Costa Rica 2-0 this morning, earning their first win and punishing the Costa Ricans with their second straight defeat of the tournament.

Barry Trotz, who won coached the Washington Capitals to their first Stanley Cup this year, was hired as head coach of the New York Islanders yesterday. NHL.com quotes Trotz on the new position:

"When you step down you take some chances," Trotz said. "I was obviously pleasantly surprised I got a call almost immediately once word got out in the inner circles. I said, 'I'm in, I want to listen.' ... [Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello] told me about his vision and his plan for his team, what he's already done in a very short period of time, changing a lot of things, changing the culture and all that. I love that. That's what they hired me to do in Washington, change a little bit of the culture, try to win a Stanley Cup. So we're going to try and do the same thing on the Island."

Rhode Island’s Gov. Gina Raimondo signed the state’s $9.6 billion budget, which approves sports betting, according to Legal Sports Report. The Twin Rivers casinos in Lincoln and Tiverton will be the only establishments to offer single-game sports wagering initially. Rhode Island’s budget allocates the “highest percentage of revenue in the nation for sports wagering”.

Retired German tennis player Boris Becker’s diplomatic passport is fake, according to Central African Republic’ foreign minister Charles Armel Doubane, the AP reports. Becker claims that he has been appointed the Central African Republic’s attache to the European Union on sporting, cultural and humanitarian affairs. Authorities in the Central African Republic dispute Becker’s position:

Presidential spokesman Albert Yaloké Mokpeme said the head of state had never appointed Becker to the post. The presidency has said that “we are not custodians of the physical and moral integrity of this gentleman.”

Denmark and Australia Tie, Spain Gets First Win, NHL Awards See MVP go to Taylor Hall and Coach of the Year to Golden Knights’ Gallant, NY State Fails to Pass Sports Betting Laws

Denmark remains unbeaten in their last 17 games, while Australia have ended a four-game streak of losses in the World Cup as both teams tied 1-1 today, according to FIFA.com. Elsewhere Spain got the better over IR Iran with a 1-0 victory. The close match earned Spain their first win of the 2018 World Cup after tying with Portugal last Friday.

The NHL Awards in Las Vegas last night saw Taylor Hall of the New Jersey Devils taking home the Hart Trophy over Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche. Hall amassed 1264 voting points over MacKinnon’s 1194. ESPN quotes Hall on the rivalry:

"I saw Nathan briefly before the awards tonight. We were joking that we're now rivals," Hall said. "The voting was so close that you could make an argument for all three candidates. You could have had all three of us up there and it would have been totally valid. It's an honor to win out of those three guys and to represent the Devils as their first MVP."

The Las Vegas Golden Knights’ coach Gerard Gallant won the Jack Adams Award for coach of the year, after leading his team to the Stanley Cup playoffs in their first year in the league. NHL.com has a complete breakdown of the 2017-18 award winners.

New York state legislators adjourned their session yesterday without passing anticipated sports betting bills, according to Legal Sports Report. Both bills on the table contained “integrity fees”, essentially royalties from sports betting revenue, which major sports leagues such as the NBA and MLB sought. Betting is still possible under existing law, however, according to executive director of the New York State Gaming Commission, Ron Ochrym.
“Commission staff have long been working on regulations that would effectuate sports gambling under the existing statutory language,” Ochrym said. “Staff anticipates being able to provide a draft for your review in the near term.”

Morocco Eliminated by Ronaldo’s Record-Setting Goal, NBA London 2019 Announced and Sports Betting Up and Running in New Jersey

Morocco is the first team eliminated from the World Cup following a 1-0 loss to Portugal this morning. Cristiano Ronaldo scored Portugal’s lone goal, his 85th for his country which is the most that any European player has scored in 150 years of international soccer (or football if you prefer). FIFA.com quotes Morocco’s team reporter Zineb El Houari on the defeat:

“Morocco will leave the Luzhniki with plenty of regret. They created plenty of opportunities without scoring, due to their lack of cutting edge up front. Renard's 4-3-3 tactic saw plenty of attacking threat, but placing Achraf Hakimi in an unfamiliar left-sided role ultimately proved costly with the Portuguese goal coming from that side. In the end, Portugal took revenge on Morocco for their victory at Mexico 1986.”

Elsewhere in the tournament, host country Russia scored a 3-1 victory over Egypt and Senegal claimed the first win for an African country, besting Poland 2-1.

The NBA announced today that the NBA London Game 2019 will feature a regular season game between the Washington Wizards and the New York Knicks. The game will be on Thursday, January 17 of 2019 at the O2 Arena. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver commented on the league’s relationship with London.

“We’ve been playing regular-season match-ups in London for nearly a decade, and over that time the games and the surrounding festivities have grown into the equivalent of an NBA All-Star experience transported to Europe.  Fans and partners from across the continent come to celebrate basketball and enjoy the excitement and experience of an NBA game.”

Newly legal sports betting is now up and running at Atlantic City’s Borgata casino and Monmouth Park in New Jersey. The Associated Press reports that the soon-to-be opened Ocean Resort casino hopes to join them as it seeks a casino license from state gambling regulators today.

The casinos and tracks report their sports betting revenue to the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, which will publicly release monthly totals along with traditional casino revenue. The next such report is due for release July 12, and neither the Borgata nor Monmouth would reveal their totals before then.

Egypt’s Salah Back From Injury to Face Russia, Capitals’ Coach Barry Trotz Resigns as Contract Negotiations Fail and Minnesota Added to PGA Tour for 2019

Yesterday’s FIFA World Cup matches saw Sweden beat Korea Republic 1-0, Belgium triumph over Panama 3-0 and England getting the better of Tunisia with a 2-1 victory. Today Japan and Senegal won against Colombia and Poland, respectively, each with a 2-1 final score. Host country Russia is eyeing their second tournament win in a game against Egypt. ESPN reports, however, that Egypt’s star player, Mohamed Salah, will return to play from an injury for today’s match.

Despite having confidence that he would return, the Washington Capitals’ Stanley Cup-winning head coach Barry Trotz stepped down after a contract dispute and is now a free agent, according to the Associated Press. The Capitals’ general manager Brian MacLellan explained that Trotz’s wanting a five-year contract is what made negotiations more difficult.

“His representative wants to take advantage of Barry’s experience and Stanley Cup win and was trying to negotiate a deal that compensates him as one of the better coaches in the league, top four or five coaches. I think the five-year term is probably a sticking point. You have a coach that’s been here four years, you do another five, that’s nine years. There’s not many coaches that have that lasting ability. It’s a long time and it’s a lot of money to be committing to a coach.”

PGATOUR.COM reports that Minnesota will be getting an official PGA tour event, starting in 2019. The event will be hosted by the nonprofit 3M Open Fund and is a seven-year deal.

“3M is honored to welcome the top players on the PGA TOUR to the Twin Cities, and we look forward to the many opportunities this tournament will bring to support our community,” said Paul Keel, 3M senior vice president of Business Development and Marketing-Sales. “We’ve formed a great relationship with PGA TOUR Champions over the last 25 years and are excited to build on that partnership with the 3M Open.”
