2018 Open Starts Today, Geraint Thomas Takes Stage 12, Extends Lead at Tour de France, Kazakh Figure Skater Denis Ten Stabbed to Death and Dodgers Acquire Machado in Trade

The 2018 Open Championship at Carnoustie Golf Links in Angus, Scotland kicked off today. Round one has so far seen Tiger Woods starting off strong with multiple birdies but at press time has just scored an unexpected close-range bogey on the 13th green. 2017 Open winner Jordan Spieth was three under par and within two strokes of the lead as he began the 15th hole, but a series of miscalculations left him finishing +1. Kevin Kisner currently tops the leaderboard with a -5.

Welsh cyclist Geraint Thomas won his second consecutive stage at the Tour de France, taking stage 12 on Alpe d'Huez today. Thomas is the first Briton to win a stage on Alpe d’Huez and the first man to win while wearing a yellow jersey, according to a report in the Telegraph. Thomas, who is currently leading the race for Team Sky, commented on the stage 12 victory:

"Not even in my wildest dreams did I think I would win on here," Thomas said. "It's one of those things that will stay with me for the rest of my life."

Kazakh figure skater, Denis Ten, who won a bronze medal at Sochi 2014, died in a hospital after being stabbed by two men trying to steal his car mirrors, according to CNN. Writing on Twitter, American skater Adam Rippon paid tribute to Ten:

My skating friend, @Tenis_Den, passed away today. He was so kind to everyone and a huge inspiration to me and so many other people. Murdered in the streets of Kazakhstan. Denis, thank you for showing us how to be a champion. Your time with us was way too short. Love you forever.

ESPN reports that the Los Angeles Dodgers acquired All-Star Manny Machado from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for five prospects last night. Dan Duquette, the Orioles’ executive vice president of baseball operations commented on the trade:

"Obviously, it's a bittersweet day for our organization. We watched Manny grow up in our franchise the past eight years. We all know what an exceptional talent he is, from the great plays that he made to his elite hitting. He's always going to be an important part of our club's history."

The five prospects the Orioles get in return are: outfielder Yusniel Diaz, right-hander Dean Kremer, third baseman Rylan Bannon, righty Zach Pop and third baseman Breyvic Valera.

Comcast Gives Up Bid For Fox Assets, Clears Way for Disney and Sportsman’s Warehouse Announces Second Public Offering

Stocks discussed: (NasdaqGS:CMCSA) (NasdaqGS:FOXA) (NYSE:DIS) (NasdaqGS:SPWH)

Comcast Corporation (NasdaqGS:CMCSA) has issued a statement announcing that it “does not intend to pursue further the acquisition of the Twenty-First Century Fox (NasdaqGS:FOXA) assets”. This clears the way for The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) to pursue the acquisition without dueling with Comcast.

Sportsman’s Warehouse (NasadqGS:SPWH) has announced a second public offering of 2,822,652 shares that are being sold by its stockholders, Seidler Equity Partners III, L.P. and SK Capital Holdings, L.P.

AL Wins All-Star Game with Record 10 Homers, Geraint Thomas Wins Stage 10 at Tour de France Taking Race Lead and Raptors Send DeRozen to Spurs in Trade for Leonard

The American League beat the National League 8-6 in the MLB All-Star Game last night. The game saw a record-breaking 10 home runs and Alex Bregman of the Houston Astros won MVP. The Associated Press quotes American League manager A.J. Hinch, also of the Astros commenting on the barrage of sluggers seen in the game:

“Standard operation nowadays, right? We’re going to homer and punch out as an industry.”

“There’s a great love affair with both results. I mean, to kind of empty your tank and hit homers tonight at this event is probably the best thing imaginable,” he said. “Just to have that kind of emotion that comes with the home run, especially when the big boys hit it and especially when the Astros hit it.”

British cyclist Geraint Thomas has won stage 11 after a high mountain climb to La Rosière and in doing so has taken the lead at the Tour de France, BBC Sport reports. Belgian rider Greg van Avermaet, who had been leading since stage 3, is now ranked number 27 overall after this most recent stage.

The AP reports that Kawhi Leonard of the San Antonio Spurs has been traded to the Toronto Raptors. In exchange, the Raptors sent DeMar DeRozen to the Spurs. DeRozen appeared to be upset by the news, writing on an Instagram story:

“Ain’t no loyalty in this game,” “Sell you out quick for a little bit of nothing ... .”

EA’s Madden NFL 19 Reveals Antonio Brown as Cover Athlete and Dorel’s Schwinn Teams with Life is Good for Limited Cruiser Bike

Stocks discussed: (NasdaqGS:EA) (TSX:DII-B.TO)

Electronic Arts (NasdaqGS:EA) revealed that Pittsburgh Steelers star wide receiver, Antonio Brown, is the cover athlete for their Madden NFL 19 title. The game is set to be released worldwide on August 10th.

“I am beyond honored to be on the cover of both Madden games,” said Brown. “There’s a lot of milestones athletes dream of, and after being inducted into the Madden 99 Club earlier this year, and now appearing on the cover of this year’s games, it’s clear that business is not just booming, but I’m also among the all-time greatest with these honors.”

Dorel Industries Inc.’s (TSX:DII-B.TO) Schwinn has teamed up with the Life is Good Company to launch a special edition, co-branded cruiser bike. There will be a limited run of 200 made in both men’s and women’s sizes.

Alaphilippe Takes Stage 10 of Tour de France, Nationals’ Bryce Harper Wins Home Run Derby, Usain Bolt in Talks to Play Soccer and NJ Receives 5 More Betting Applications

French cyclist Julian Alaphilippe has won stage 10 of the Tour de France, according to BBC Sport. This marks the 26 year-old’s first career stage win of the Tour. Currently, Belgium’s Greg van Avermaet is leading, but may lose ground in the coming stages.

Team Sky and the other general classification teams know Van Avermaet, who is not a pure climber, should still lose the race lead over the next two days in the Alps but this was a superb ride to keep his yellow jersey into an eighth day.

Washington Nationals star Bryce Harper won the Home Run Derby yesterday, hitting 19 homers, in the prelude to tonight’s MLB All-Star Game. ESPN quotes Harper paying respect to his hometown crowd at Nationals Park:

"This wasn't only for me and my family and everybody like that, but this is for, you know, the cook, the guy that works the front and the people that work upstairs," Harper said. "I mean, this is the whole city of D.C. I was very fortunate to be able to bring this back to them and do it here."

Usain Bolt, who retired from sprinting last year, is in talks to play soccer for a pro team in Australia, NPR reports. The Central Coast Mariners of Australia’s A-League are considering Bolt. The team’s CEO, Shaun Mielekamp, expressed skepticism about the move but also enthusiasm at the possibility.

"We won't know until it happens. It may not happen," Mielekamp said. "We've just got to keep a very level-headed approach to us."
"When he [Bolt] does perform and when he does score a goal, that's the big moment," he said. "That's the bit that everyone wants. Let's not shut the door on that opportunity. Let's see if it will become a reality."
The Associated Press reports that New Jersey’s director of the state Division of Gaming Enforcement, David Rebuck, said that five new sports betting applications have been received in anticipation for football season. This follows news that sports betting took in $16.4 million USD in the first two weeks of being operational. Rebuck expressed confidence that more applicants will be approved.
“I fully expect that by Aug. 1 we will see additional properties up and running,” he said.

France Wins Second World Cup, Kerber and Djokovic Victorious at Wimbledon, Groenewegen and Degenkolb Win Stages on Tour de France, Dixon Wins Indy Race in Toronto and Stanley Cup-Winning Goalie Ray Emery Drowns

France won their second ever World Cup title yesterday with a 4-2 victory over Croatia at the 2018 FIFA World Cup final in Russia. The team are now one of six in the tournament’s history to have won the title more than once, after previously winning in 1998. FIFA.com quotes France’s team reporter Adrien Gingold on the victory:

“Tonight, the Croatian team played better football, but France were more efficient, perhaps even more intelligent. Les Bleus’ strength is exactly this: no matter who they faced, they found the solution to beat their adversaries, one by one. Without being brilliant today, they scored four goals, which gives an idea about France's level, and their coach’s one. Today, with his smart tactical set-up, Didier Deschamps won the duel with Dalic.”

On Saturday Belgium beat England 2-0 for the third place title.

Germany’s Angelique Kerber beat Serena Williams 6-3, 6-3 for the Wimbledon Women’s Singles title on Saturday. It would have been Williams eighth Wimbledon title and 24th Grand Slam title, a tie with the current record held by Margaret Court. Kerber is the first German woman to win the title since Steffi Graff in 1996.

For the Men’s Singles title on Sunday, Serbia’s Novak Djokovic swept South African Kevin Anderson 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (3), winning his fourth Wimbledon championship. ESPN quotes Djokovic, who hasn’t won a Grand Slam title in two years, on the win:

"There is no better place in the world to really be making a comeback," Djokovic said. "This is a sacred place for the world of tennis."

Today is the first Rest Day of the Tour de France. Over the weekend, however, Dutch rider Dylan Groenewegen scored a back-to-back win after taking stages seven and eight on Friday and Saturday respectively. Cycling News quotes Groenewegen on the feat:

"The legs are better every day,” Groenewegen said after the finish. “Today it was a fast final with a lot of corners but the team did an amazing job and my position was good and I saw Gaviria and Greipel were fighting for position. I saw the finish and thought ‘this is the moment.’ It was a hectic final, but that’s every day in the Tour.”

German rider John Degenkolb won stage nine yesterday.

IndyCar racer Scott Dixon won at the Honda Toronto Indy yesterday. It marks the third time the New Zealand-born racer has won the race.

Stanley Cup-winning goaltender Ray Emery drowned in Hamilton, Ontario after a “swimming accident” according to a report from the Associated Press. The Chicago Blackhawks, with whom Emery won the Cup in 2013, issued a statement regarding his passing:

“The Blackhawks will fondly remember Ray as a fierce competitor, a good teammate and a Stanley Cup champion.”
