Shortlist
Novak Djokovic captured his first Cincinnati
Masters title yesterday, beating rival Roger Federer 6-4, 6-4. Federer, who has
won the tournament seven times, has thrice denied Djokovic from winning and
until yesterday had never lost a final in Cincinnati. This is Djokovic’s first
time winning the tournament after making it to the finals five time previously.
BBC Sport quotes Federer on Djokovic’s victory:
"Congratulations to Novak for your amazing
effort not just this week, but throughout your whole career, it is an amazing
achievement.
Kiki Bertens beat top ranked Simona Halep 2-6, 7-6 (6), 6-2 to capture her
first Cincinnati title. This marks Bertens’ first time beating a top ranked
player, the Associated Press reports.
Halep, who had enjoyed a nine-game winning streak prior, and will enter the
U.S. Open next week ranked No. 1, looked forward to the break between
tournaments and felt confident from her performance.
“I need a little
bit of rest because I’m exhausted. But I also take the positive from these two
weeks. It’s a great confidence (boost).”
Kyle Busch,
who is first in the NASCAR Cup rankings, had an unsuccessful weekend as he
tried but failed to score his eighth Cup event win at Bristol Motor Speedway,
andt ended up being blamed for causing Martin Truex Jr. to crash. ESPN reports that
Truex does not hold it against Busch.
"I didn't
think he was going to run into me," Truex said. "Usually we race
great together all the time. We had one incident last year, and it was my fault
totally [at Indianapolis], and we had this one incident tonight, and obviously
it was totally his fault. I guarantee you he didn't do it on purpose. It is
just the way it goes sometimes."
UEFA.com has announced
their shortlist for UEFA Men’s Player of the Year, which will be awarded on
August 30. On the list are Luka Modrić of Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo of Real
Madrid/Juventus and Mohamed Salah of Liverpool.
