Churchill Downs Incorporated (NasdaqGS:CHDN) has announced that the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) has approved temporary licenses for six CDI properties to begin accepting in-person sports wagers on Thursday, September 7, 2023. This, according to the press release, will see CDI’s licensed Race and Sports Books “incorporate sports betting kiosks among existing bar and simulcast areas for guests to place wagers.” Bill Carstanjen, CEO of CDI, said:

“CDI is excited to bring our experience operating retail sports wagering experiences to Kentucky with many thanks to the Kentucky General Assembly, Governor Beshear, the KHRC and the Kentucky Public Protection Cabinet for their efforts in making this a reality. Sports betting as a tourism and economic development opportunity will further strengthen the state’s signature equine industry by bringing new guests into our live and historical racing venues.”

Foot Locker, Inc. (NYSE:FL) has reported its financial results for the second quarter ended July 29, 2023. Highlights include sales of $1.86 billion USD – a decline from the $2.06 billion earned in Q2 of 2022, the opening of 15 new stores, the remodeling or relocation of 16 stores, and the closing of 108 stores. The company’s President and CEO, Mary Dillon, said:

"Our second quarter was broadly in line with our expectations, despite the still-tough consumer backdrop. However, we did see a softening in trends in July and are adjusting our 2023 outlook to allow us to best compete for price-sensitive consumers, while still leaning into the strategic investments that drive our Lace Up plan. Importantly, we are continuing to make progress on our inventory levels and look to best position the business for the upcoming holiday season and into 2024."

Spanish Soccer Federation President Refuses to Resign Following Kiss Controversy, and WWE Star Bray Wyatt Dies at 36

The Associated Press reports that Luis Rubiales, the president of the Spanish soccer federation, has refused to resign today, following the uproar he caused when he kissed a player on the lips without her consent after the Women’s World Cup final. Rubiales is being pressured to quit his position by Spain’s acting prime minister, players’ unions, Spain’s women players, and more. It had been previously reported that Rubiales was planning to step down after grabbing and kissing Jenni Hermoso during the awards ceremony in Sydney, Australia, following Spain’s 1-0 victory over England on Sunday.

“The kiss was the same I could give one of my daughters,” Rubiales said.

Former WWE champion Bray Wyatt died yesterday at the age of 36, according to a report from ESPN. Wyatt, whose real name was Windham Rotunda, had been with WWE since 2009, and was “known for being one of the most creative minds in professional wrestling who pushed the boundaries with innovative characters.” Fellow wrestler Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson posted on X:

“I'm heartbroken over the news of Bray Wyatt’s passing. Always had tremendous respect and love for him and the Rotunda family. Loved his presence, promos, in ring work and connection with @wwe universe. Very unique, cool and rare character, which is hard to create in our crazy world of pro wrestling.”

The House of Sport outlet is “an approximately 100,000+ square foot store that provides customers with an incredible assortment of products along with in-store experiences,” and launches with an activity-filled weekend for the grand opening. Toni Roeller, senior vice president, In-store Environment, Visual Merchandising and House of Sport, explained:

England to Face Spain in FIFA Women’s World Cup Final on Sunday, and Washington Commanders Announce Sam Howell as Starting Quarterback

The FIFA Women’s World Cup is about to see its first all-European final since 2003, with Spain and England competing for the title in Sydney, Australia this Sunday. An England victory would be the first time that the World Cup trophy returned to the birthplace of the sport since 1966, when the men’s team beat West Germany 4-2. The Associated Press quotes England coach Sarina Wiegman, who said:

“Every step has been really, really hard. But again, we find a way. And I think the opponents, the women’s game has grown so much that it’s really hard to get through. So I know it’s very, very special and that’s how it feels, too.”

ESPN reports that in the NFL, the Washington Commanders have named Sam Howell as their starting quarterback. Fellow quarterback Jacoby Brisset was also in the running for the position. The team’s head coach, Ron Rivera, who made the announcement today, said:

"This was about what Sam did. Jacoby has been a true pro and done everything asked, and he's also helped mentor Sam. He's a more than viable quarterback. But there were certain things Sam had to show us, and everybody knew from my perspective it was Sam's to lose, and he did nothing to lose it."

Spain Advances to Women’s World Cup Semifinals, and Bautista to Sign One-Day Contract to Retire as a Toronto Blue Jay

The Associated Press reports that Spain has advanced to the Women’s World Cup semifinals for the very first time following their 2-1 victory over the Netherlands in Wellington, New Zealand today. A 5.0 magnitude earthquake shook the city one hour before kickoff, but did not appear to shake 19-year-old Salma Paralluelo, who went on to score late in extra time to earn Spain the win. Spain’s coach Jorge Vilda said:

“We were so concentrated. Yes, it was a middle (moderate) shake, an earthquake, but not today. The earthquake was the victory of Spain.”

Sportsnet reports that right-fielder Jose Bautista will sign a one-day contract so he can retire as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays ahead of his addition to the club’s Level of Excellence on Saturday. In doing so, Bautista won’t have played his last game in the majors as a Blue Jay, but will retire as one. In an interview for the book The Big 50: Toronto Blue Jays by Shi Davidi (who also wrote the article), Bautista said:

“I wish I could have retired playing my last game as a Blue Jay. But you can't get everything that you want in life. That's one of those things for me.”
