Quintana takes Grueling Stage 17 at Tour de France, Cavs Sign Love to
4-Year Extension Worth $120 Million and Mets’ Cespedes Off for 8-10 Months for
Heel Surgery
Colombian rider Nairo Quintana took stage 17 of the
Tour de France today, his first win of this year’s race, according to a report
on ESPN. The 65
km stage, ending at Saint-Lary-Soulan,
though being the shortest of the Tour so far this century, is very grueling and
features three category one climbs. The stage win puts Quintana at number five
overall. Still in first place overall is Welsh rider Geraint Thomas, who came
in third today.
The Cleveland
Cavaliers signed All-Star Kevin Love to a four-year $120 million extension,
according to the Associated Press. Love sported
a hard hat as he signed the contract in front of dozens of construction workers
at the Cavs’ Quicken Loans Arena, which is undergoing a $140 million
renovation. Love addressed the uncertainties around his status with the team
and expressed gratitude for signing the extension.
“I look back,
everything happens for a reason,” Love said. “My best friend from back home
said, ‘It always works out.’ This is where I wanted to be. I’ve said that all
along. There were some tough times where potentially I would have been traded
and my name came up in rumors every few months. But hopefully that ends now.”
New York Mets’
outfielder Yoenis Cespedes will be out of play for at least 8 to 10 months to
undergo surgery on both heels, according to a report on Newsday. The two-time
All Star needs the surgery to repair calcification around his Achilles tendons. John Ricco, one of the Mets’ three acting
general managers, said Cespedes’ condition was contributing to other issues as
well.
“The concern on our end was not only the pain he
was in, but also the fact that it was contributing to him altering his running
style and therefore, leading to some of these other leg issues,” Ricco said.
“And you get to the point where that doesn’t make any sense because you’re
going to stay in that cycle.”
