Germany Eliminated from World Cup, Hockey Hall of Fame Inducts Brodeur,
St. Louis, Bettman and Serena Williams Seeded 25th for Wimbledon
2014 FIFA World Cup champions Germany, have been
eliminated today in a 2-0 loss to Korea Republic. Germany’s head coach Joachim
Low expressed surprise and dismay at the loss but said the future of German football
still looked strong.
"I’m shocked. Shocked because we didn’t manage
to pull it off and beat Korea Republic and we lost this game. It wasn’t my
impression when I spoke to the team before that they were under pressure before
the match because the Sweden game was on at the same time and we really had the
feeling that our team wanted to move ahead and qualify for the knockout stages.
"How do we go from here? We’ll have to talk
about it calmly and I think it’s premature for me to say something. It will
take me some hours to come to terms with it and I’m incredibly disappointed by
this elimination.
"Do I think this will bring about a dark time
in German football? No, I don’t think so. I think we have young players who are
very talented, and some have the potential to go forward. This has happened to
other nations before, we just have to draw the right conclusions and make it
better going forward."
The Hockey Hall of Fame’s Class of 2018 were
announced yesterday with Martin Brodeur, Martin St. Louis, Willie O’Ree,
Alexander Yakushev, Jayna Hefford and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman chosen for
induction. NHL.com quotes O’Ree, the first black player in the NHL, on receiving the news
of his selection:
"I was
laughing and I was crying and I was at a loss for words," O'Ree, 82, said
of his reaction when he received the call informing him he had been elected to
the Hall of Fame. "It's just been a great year this year."
Wayne Gretzky
congratulated Bettman, who has been the NHL Commissioner since 1993, and noted
his consistent passion for the sport.
"The
Commissioner's vision to give every club a chance to win the Stanley Cup has
made our game stronger. His leadership and love for hockey is very evident. And
hockey has become more entertaining year after year, thanks in part to his
passion for the game. Congratulations, Mr. Bettman."
The All
England Club has seeded Serena Williams at No. 25 for the Wimbledon tournament
above her ranking of 183rd, according to the Associated Press. This will be
Williams’ first time competing at Wimbledon after her pregnancy. Williams is a
seven-time champion at Wimbledon.
