Harden Wins MVP at NBA Awards, WBA Gives Anthony Joshua 24 Hours to Sign Deal to Fight Alexander Povetkin and Australia Eliminated from World Cup

The 2018 NBA Awards were held last night in Santa Monica, California. James Harden of the Houston Rockets was voted by fans as the most valuable player after having come second twice. The Associated Press quotes Harden on the win:

“The last four years have been like knocking on the door, knocking on the door. Now the moment is finally here,” Harden said backstage. “Just every single year you try to come back and be better than you were the year before, and just to be holding that trophy finally, it means a lot.”

Fox Sports reports that the World Boxing Association (WBA) has given boxer Anthony Joshua 24 hours to sign a deal to fight Alexander Povetkin or risk losing the WBA portion of his world heavyweight boxing titles. Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn claimed to be near agreement in negotiations for Joshua to fight the WBC champion Deontay Wilder, but were waiting for “clarifications”.

WBA president Gilberto Mendoza said in a statement: “The WBA have allowed over a month extension to negotiations with Povetkin and also ongoing discussions with Deontay Wilder.

“It appears the Wilder team have not returned the contract for the fight and therefore we are requesting a date for the Joshua versus Povetkin fight with immediate effect.”

Peru ended their eight-game winless streak in the World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Australia today. The last time Peru had won a World Cup match was 4-1 triumph over Iran in 1978. Australia has now lost five of their last six, and is now eliminated from the tournament. FIFA.com quotes Australia team reporter Sarah Widera on the loss:

“It may be something of a cliché, but Australia can travel home from this World Cup with their heads held high. Their elimination will be heartbreaking for their fans, who had hoped for better things following some positive displays in Russia – including against Peru, whom they pressed hard without success.”

Russia Defeated by Uruguay, England Rocks Panama, Hamilton Wins First French Grand Prix in 10 Years and Truex Wins NASCAR Sonoma

World Cup host Russia lost 3-0 to Uruguay today after winning their first two against Saudi Arabia and Egypt. Russian team reporter Igor Borunov explained the loss as having to do with Russia facing a tougher team than previously. FIFA.com quotes Borunov:

“Russia had to face a different level of opponent this time; an opponent with skill and experience at major tournaments. Everything went wrong for the host team. Uruguay punished their very first mistake but there was more. Luck was also not on Russia’s side when a deflection off Cheryshev’s leg led to another goal. Smolnikov's sending off in the first half ultimately made their mission almost impossible. Russia fought bravely to the final whistle and got the experience of a tough game that could possibly help them to prepare for the round of 16.”

England is keeping their World Cup hopes alive after thrashing Panama 6-1 on Sunday. England’s Harry Kane scored three goals in the match, adding to the pair he scored in England’s 2-1 win over Tunisia a week ago.

In the first French Grand Prix in 10 years, British racer Lewis Hamilton won handily, after dominating the race from beginning to end with the exception of one lap. With the victory, Hamilton regained his position at the top of the Formula One championship over rival Sebastian Vettel, who finished fifth overall in the race. CNN quotes Hamilton on the win:

"My guys [Mercedes], I've been with them for six years and they are just continuously pushing the boundaries and never giving up, so I'm just forever grateful for all their work, here at the track and back at the factory.
"But there's a long way to go and we'll keep approaching the rest of the season like we approached today.''
Martin Truex Jr. won the NASCAR Cup Series race in Sonoma, CA, scoring his 18th career victory. Truex finished a comfortable 10.51 seconds ahead of racer Kevin Harvick, due in part to his crew’s pit strategy, as USA Today reports:

Truex's crew chief Cole Pearn pretended to call Truex to the pits with a little less than 40 laps to go in the final stage, prompting Harvick, who was leading at the time, to hit pit road. But Pearn then quickly told Truex to stay out, a move that resulted in Truex being able to use fresher tires later in the stage to blow past the leaders and open a huge lead.

Argentina Suffers 3-0 Loss to Croatia, Capitals’ Cup-Winning Coach Barry Trotz Hired by Islanders, Rhode Island Signs Sports Betting Budget and Boris Becker’s Passport Accused of Being Fake

Yesterday Argentina suffered a 3-0 loss to Croatia yesterday as Lionel Messi’s team failed to secure a win in their second game. Argentina’s team reporter Diego Zandrino is quoted on the loss on FIFA.com:

A nightmare! That is what the match became for an Argentina side that lacked both the invention and the desire to turn their night around after falling behind to a costly goalkeeping error. Their hopes of reaching the knockout phase are now hanging by a thread.

Brazil beat Costa Rica 2-0 this morning, earning their first win and punishing the Costa Ricans with their second straight defeat of the tournament.

Barry Trotz, who won coached the Washington Capitals to their first Stanley Cup this year, was hired as head coach of the New York Islanders yesterday. NHL.com quotes Trotz on the new position:

"When you step down you take some chances," Trotz said. "I was obviously pleasantly surprised I got a call almost immediately once word got out in the inner circles. I said, 'I'm in, I want to listen.' ... [Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello] told me about his vision and his plan for his team, what he's already done in a very short period of time, changing a lot of things, changing the culture and all that. I love that. That's what they hired me to do in Washington, change a little bit of the culture, try to win a Stanley Cup. So we're going to try and do the same thing on the Island."

Rhode Island’s Gov. Gina Raimondo signed the state’s $9.6 billion budget, which approves sports betting, according to Legal Sports Report. The Twin Rivers casinos in Lincoln and Tiverton will be the only establishments to offer single-game sports wagering initially. Rhode Island’s budget allocates the “highest percentage of revenue in the nation for sports wagering”.

Retired German tennis player Boris Becker’s diplomatic passport is fake, according to Central African Republic’ foreign minister Charles Armel Doubane, the AP reports. Becker claims that he has been appointed the Central African Republic’s attache to the European Union on sporting, cultural and humanitarian affairs. Authorities in the Central African Republic dispute Becker’s position:

Presidential spokesman Albert Yaloké Mokpeme said the head of state had never appointed Becker to the post. The presidency has said that “we are not custodians of the physical and moral integrity of this gentleman.”

Denmark and Australia Tie, Spain Gets First Win, NHL Awards See MVP go to Taylor Hall and Coach of the Year to Golden Knights’ Gallant, NY State Fails to Pass Sports Betting Laws

Denmark remains unbeaten in their last 17 games, while Australia have ended a four-game streak of losses in the World Cup as both teams tied 1-1 today, according to FIFA.com. Elsewhere Spain got the better over IR Iran with a 1-0 victory. The close match earned Spain their first win of the 2018 World Cup after tying with Portugal last Friday.

The NHL Awards in Las Vegas last night saw Taylor Hall of the New Jersey Devils taking home the Hart Trophy over Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche. Hall amassed 1264 voting points over MacKinnon’s 1194. ESPN quotes Hall on the rivalry:

"I saw Nathan briefly before the awards tonight. We were joking that we're now rivals," Hall said. "The voting was so close that you could make an argument for all three candidates. You could have had all three of us up there and it would have been totally valid. It's an honor to win out of those three guys and to represent the Devils as their first MVP."

The Las Vegas Golden Knights’ coach Gerard Gallant won the Jack Adams Award for coach of the year, after leading his team to the Stanley Cup playoffs in their first year in the league. NHL.com has a complete breakdown of the 2017-18 award winners.

New York state legislators adjourned their session yesterday without passing anticipated sports betting bills, according to Legal Sports Report. Both bills on the table contained “integrity fees”, essentially royalties from sports betting revenue, which major sports leagues such as the NBA and MLB sought. Betting is still possible under existing law, however, according to executive director of the New York State Gaming Commission, Ron Ochrym.
“Commission staff have long been working on regulations that would effectuate sports gambling under the existing statutory language,” Ochrym said. “Staff anticipates being able to provide a draft for your review in the near term.”
