At Cincinnati Djokovic/Dimitrov and Federer/Mayer Matches Suspended Due to Rainfall, Keys Beats Kerber and Halep Wins Postponed Match - Patriots Triumph Over Super Bowl Champ Eagles and Green Bay’s Rodgers Returns for Win Against Steelers

At the Cincinnati Masters yesterday, defending champion Grigor Dimitrov and 2018 Wimbledon-winner Novak Djokovic had their match suspended overnight due to heavy rainfall. Also postponed was Roger Federer’s match against Argentine Leonardo Mayer. Angelique Kerber, who won the Women’s Singles title at Wimbledon last month, was beaten by American player Madison Keys. 2018 Rogers Cup-winner Simona Halep won her suspended match against Ajla Tomljanovic 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 yesterday afternoon.

Tom Brady and the New England Patriots beat 2018 Super Bowl champions the Philadelphia Eagles 37-20 in a preseason game last night. ESPN reports that Brady led six drives, of which the first led to a touchdown pass to receiver Chris Hogan. This was Brady’s first preseason game, as he had to miss the opener against the Washington Redskins on August 9 due to a sore back.

"It's the first time having to do that in about six months," Brady said after Brian Hoyer wrapped up the victory. "I feel like my timing could be better in certain areas. I've been doing this for a long time, so a lot of it is second nature at this point."

Elsewhere, the Green Bay Packers beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 51-34 at Lambeau Field last night. Quarterback and two-time Associated Press-voted league MVP Aaron Rodgers got a standing ovation at the game after having been absent for almost 11 months, according to the AP.

“To be back at Lambeau was a thrill and the ovation touched me,” Rodgers said. “I have to kind of wipe away some tears in my eyes.”

Djokovic Advances at Cincinnati, Halep Match Suspended, Davis Cup Announces Changes for 2019, Real Madrid Lose in Super Cup to Atlético in First Game Without Ronaldo and Kasey Kahne Retires from NASCAR Racing

Novak Djokovic triumphed yesterday over French player Adrian Mannarino, winning 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 at the Cincinnati Open. Djokovic, who won the Men’s Singles title at Wimbledon last month, has competed five times at Cincinnati, but has yet to win. The Associated Press quotes Djokovic on the determination he’s derived from his history in the tournament.

“I think it adds more to the motivation rather than pressure,” Djokovic said. “I really want to win this tournament. I definitely need to play better than I have in the first couple of matches.”

Elsewhere in Cincinnati, 2018 Rogers Cup champion Simona Halep’s match against Ajla Tomljanovic was suspended due to rainfall. Rogers Cup finalist Sloane Stephens beat out German Tatjana Maria 6-3, 6-2.

In other tennis news, an announcement on the Davis Cup’s official website indicated that as of 2019, “the competition will see 18 nations and the world’s best players compete in a week long season finale to be crowned Davis Cup champions”. The new version of the competition will debut from November 18 to 24 next year in either Madrid, Spain or Lille, France.

Real Madrid debuted their first match without star Cristiano Ronaldo, who recently signed with Juventus, with a 4-2 loss to Atlético Madrid at the UEFA Super Cup. It was also the team’s first game without manager Zinedine Zidane, who was replaced by former Spain coach Julen Lopetegui, according to BBC Sport.

NASCAR driver Kasey Kahne, who has 18 victories in 15 cup seasons, announced his retirement from racing via Twitter today. Kahne, who is 38 years old, explained his decision in the tweet as resulting from the difficult schedule he had to endure, and his desire to spend more time with his son.

“..racing in cup full time for a few more years was just something that I couldn’t commit to. I’m not sure what the future holds for me, but I know I’m at ease with the decision that I have made. The highs didn’t outweigh the lows and the grueling schedule takes a toll on your quality of life. I need to spend more time doing the things I enjoy and love and that’s spending time with Tanner and my sprint car teams.”

Federer Advances, Williams Eliminated at Cincinnati Masters, Joint Korean Women’s Basketball Team Annihilates Host Indonesia at Asian Games and NJ Sports Betting Makes $40.6 Million in July

Roger Federer advances to the third round of the Cincinnati Masters after beating German Peter Gojowczyk 6-4, 6-4. The Associated Press quotes Federer on being back at the Cincinnati Masters, which he hasn’t played since winning in 2015.

“It doesn’t feel like I have been away for so long here from Cincinnati,” Federer said. “I guess the wheel keeps turning. It’s not like I missed two years of tennis. It was a great pleasure to be back.”

Serena Williams, who also hasn’t competed at the tournament since winning in 2015, was eliminated after losing 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 eighth-seeded Czech player Petra Kvitova in the second round.

“You know, this is a long comeback,” she said. “I just began. I just started — definitely at the very, very beginning. I’m getting there, and I’m going to just continue to work hard, and hopefully, I’ll start winning more matches.”

The Korean women’s basketball team, composed of players from both North and South Korea, dominated host country Indonesia 108-40 yesterday at the Asian Games. The top scorer of the game was North Korean Ro Suk Yong, who posted 22 points in Jakarta, according to Channel NewsAsia. Korea’s coach Lee Moon-kyu said that despite not having much time to practice as a unified team, the players had enough in common to succeed.

"We haven't had a lot of time to work on our team chemistry but we speak the same language and we are all on the same page. North or South Korean, we all have the same desire to win."

The AP reports that New Jersey casinos and racetracks brought in $40.6 million in sports betting revenue for July, the first full month that it was legal in the state. Also, it was announced this morning that Atlantic City’s Golden Nugget casino was approved by State Division of Gaming Enforcement Director David Rebuck to offer sports betting.

Williams Dominates Opening Round at Cincinnati, Woods Eyed by Furyk for Ryder Cup Team, U.S. Open Wildcards Announced and Casino Sports Betting Licensed in West Virginia

Serena Williams scored a first round victory at the Cincinnati Open yesterday, beating Australian Daria Gavrilova 6-1, 6-2. This follows Williams surprisingly lopsided 6-1, 6-0 loss to British player Johanna Konta at the opening of the Stanford Classic on July 31. The Guardian quotes Williams on her comeback year:

“I realised after Wimbledon that this is a journey for me,” the 36-year-old Williams said. “It’s going to come and I’m taking it one day at a time. I’m just fortunate to be back here on these courts playing tennis. Everything is truly amazing.”

Following the PGA Championship in Bellerive, MO, the eight players currently qualified for the U.S. Ryder Cup team are: Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Patrick Reed, Bubba Watson, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler and Webb Simpson. The Associated Press quotes U.S. Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk on the possibility of Tiger Woods being included on the team as one of four possible wild cards.

“We want the players who are going to help us be successful. He’s playing very well. I think there’s a lot of folks out there who probably think he can help us. Really, what we wanted to talk about today was the top eight players. I realize Tiger is a story. I realize he’s playing very well, and I’m excited to see that.”

Victoria Azarenka, a former World No. 1 and two-time Australia Open winner, and 2004 U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova join Amanda Anisimova, Claire Liu, Asia Muhammad, Whitney Osuigwe and Harmony Tan as the seven wildcards for the U.S. Open confirmed on Wednesday by the United States Tennis Association.

The AP reports that West Virginia has licensed its first casino, The Hollywood Casino in Charles Town, for legal sports betting. Danielle Boyd, legal counsel for the Lottery Commission, said that the casino would begin installing betting software on August 21 with the aim of offering betting to the public by September 1.

Every year Madden NFL is the game that kicks off our season of EA SPORTS games, and it continues to be one of the titans of the game industry.”
