Justify Wins Preakness, Vegas Eliminates Jets, Cavs Break Deficit, Warriors Retake Series Lead and Harvick Wins NASCAR All-Star Race

Justify won the 143rd Preakness Stakes on Saturday on a foggy track at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. Leading for most of the race, Justify fought off tough competition flanked by Good Magic and Bravazo to win by a half-length. This follows Justify’s win at the Kentucky Derby and represents the second leg of the Triple Crown. The final race to secure the Triple Crown will be the Belmont Stakes on June 9 at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. Only 12 horses have won the Triple Crown in its 99-year history, the last being American Pharoah in 2015.

Over the weekend the Las Vegas Golden Knights made short work of the Winnipeg Jets, routing them on Friday and taking the Western Conference Finals last night. In Game Five in Winnipeg last night, both teams made 32 shots but the Jets could only muster one goal falling short to the Golden Knights in a 2-1 loss. In only letting in a single goal last night, many attribute Vegas goalie Marc-Andre Fleury’s performance for much of the team’s success. NHL.com quotes Knights defenseman Nate Schmidt:

"He's showing us the way home," said defenseman Nate Schmidt, who called Fleury the "line leader" of the team. "Hey, the guy has won a couple of Stanley Cups, but it may not have been the way he wanted to do it the last couple of years. For him to be back here, it shows how great of a teammate he is and why our guys love playing in front of him."

On Saturday the Tampa Bay Lightning took the series lead with a 3-2 win over the Washington Capitals. Washington faces a possible elimination in their hometown game tonight, which would pit the Lightning against the Knights for the Stanley Cup final.

In NBA news, the Cavs broke out of their two-game deficit with a 116-86 victory over the Celtics on Saturday in Cleveland. Cleveland has a chance to tie the series up 2-2 tonight. Golden State regained the series dominance over the Houston Rockets with a 126-85 in Oakland.

Kevin Harvick won the Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star Race on Saturday. NASCAR Wire Service reports:

“Harvick’s No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford was still the strongest car in the field, and the driver who already has five points wins this season added another in the marquee exhibition race, taking control of the event with an overtime surge at the end of the 20-lap third stage and sealing the victory by outrunning Daniel Suarez in the final two-lap drag race to the finish.”

Justify Favourite for Preakness on Saturday, Lightning Struck in D.C. Tying Series, and Poll Reveals Half of Americans Support Legal Sports Betting

Kentucky Derby winner Justify is gearing up to win the second leg of the Triple Crown in the Preakness Stakes this Saturday. Held at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland, the race sees Justify as the favourite with Good Magic, trained by Chad Brown, entering with 3 to 1 odds on Vegas Insider. CNN quotes Justify’s trainer Bob Baffert, who is a six-time Preakness Stakes winner:

“"The first time we worked this horse I said, 'I think we have something really special,' and after his maiden win [in February] I thought, man, he's really, really special."”

The Tampa Bay Lightning tied up their series with the Washington Capital last night with aa 4-2 victory in D.C. The game was tied going into the third period, whereupon Alex Killorn and Anthony Cirelli scored for the Lightning, securing the win. Goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy made 36 saves for Tampa. Game 5 in this series will be tomorrow in Tampa Bay, while the Winnipeg Jets will see if the house always wins as they square off against the Golden Knights in Vegas.

The Associated Press reports that a poll conducted by Fairleigh Dickinson University found that 50 percent of Americans approved of legal sports betting. The poll was conducted before the Supreme Court of the United States legalized sports gambling on the federal level on Monday.

““Sports betting is about two things: It is about legalizing what millions of Americans already do every day (and) it is about intensifying the engagement of a nation of sports fans,” said poll director Krista Jenkins, a professor of political science at the New Jersey university. “It will now be a race to see who can benefit the most and the earliest from this changed landscape.””

Celtics Beat Cavs into Two-Game Deficit, Lightning Come Back for First Win of Series and Major Sports Leagues Seek Cut of Legal Gambling Money

The Cleveland Cavaliers now face a two-game deficit against the Boston Celtics after losing last night in Boston 107-94. The two teams won’t play again until Saturday in Cleveland, giving them both three days of rest. Despite their deficit, ESPN writes that history shows the Cavs can still come back and win the series:

James has trailed 2-0 six times in his career and has come back to win twice -- the 2016 NBA Finals against the Warriors and the 2007 conference finals against the Pistons, per ESPN Stats & Information research.

Speaking of two-game deficity, the Tampa Bay Lightning got out of theirs by defeating the Capitals in Washington 4-2. Two of their goals were scored on a power play. The first by Steven Stamkos in the first period, and the second by Nikita Kucherov early in the second. A piece on NHL.com describes the strength of the Lightning power play:

“That's been happening a lot for the Lightning. After finishing third in the regular season (23.9 percent) behind the Pittsburgh Penguins (26.2) and Toronto Maple Leafs (25.0), they are 15-for-50 (30.0) on the power play in 13 playoff games, third behind the Boston Bruins (36.4) and Capitals (30.8).”

Representatives from major sports leagues sought a percentage of profits from sports betting in Rhode Island, according to report in the Associated Press. In light of the Supreme Court of the United States ruling to strike down federal law that prohibits sports betting, Rhode Island legislators could change laws to make betting on sports legal. The AP reports:

“Executives from Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association and the PGA Tour went to the statehouse Tuesday to ask for a 0.25-percent “integrity fee” if Rhode Island lawmakers bring sports gambling into the public sphere.”

According to the piece, the leagues felt that because they provide content, they should be eligible for a cut.

“The leagues said they should collect a fee because they create the source of the betting and are responsible for protecting it from fixing.

Senate Finance Committee Chairman William Conley, a Democrat, said he wasn’t convinced by their arguments.”

#PlaybyPlay; Tepper to Buy #Panthers for $2.2 Billion, Serena Williams’ Coach Says She Will Play French Open, #Vegas Ties Series with #Jets and Warriors Take Game One Win Over Rockets

Stocks discussed: (OTCQB: $SING), (OTC: $GMBL), (NYSE: $NETS), (NasdaqGS: $TTWO)

Tepper to Buy Panthers for $2.2 Billion, Serena Williams’ Coach Says She Will Play French Open, Vegas Ties Series with Jets and Warriors Take Game One Win Over Rockets

Hedge fund manager David Tepper is buying the Carolina Panthers for $2.2 billion USD according to an Associated Press report. Current team owner and founder Jerry Richardson, announced he was selling the team in December 2017 in response to an “NFL investigation into sexual and racial misconduct in the workplace.”

The $2.2 billion price tag is a record for the NFL, beating $1.4 billion paid for the Buffalo Bills in 2014. The league has to vote to approve the sale, but Tepper currently owns part of the Pittsburgh Steelers, which may make approval easier.

“Because he holds a 5 percent stake in the Steelers, Tepper’s finances already have been vetted by the league, meaning it wouldn’t take much for NFL owners to approve the sale. However, Tepper would have to sell his minority ownership stake of the Steelers, per league rules.”

Serena Williams’ coach, Patrick Mouratoglou told wtatennis.com in an exclusive interview that Williams will compete in the French Open. Williams, who had an emergency C-section pregnancy in September, started playing again prematurely according to Mouratoglou.

"Serena clearly came back too early," he said. "She was not ready yet but needed to feel the competition, so she decided to play even though she was far from being at 100 percent. It was a good experience as she realised all the work that needed to be done in order for her to be really ready."

Mouratoglou explained that it was for that reason that Williams took a break, but that she will be ready for the French open later this month.

"That is the reason why we decided to skip Madrid and Rome as she needed five weeks to be perfectly ready. Then we worked with my team in order to prepare a programme for her to get back in her best shape including nutrition, fitness and, of course, tennis. So far, things are going very well. She is working extremely hard, she is improving in all the areas fast. I am very satisfied and confident that she will be ready for Roland Garros."

In hockey news, the Las Vegas Golden Knights tied up their series with the Winnipeg Jets last night with a 3-1 win. The Golden Knights scored the first two goals in the first period in Winnipeg and each team scored once in the third. Vegas’ Jonathan Marchessault scored twice in the game. Tonight the Tampa Bay Lightning look to come back from their two-game deficit facing the Capitals in Washington.

In the NBA playoffs the Golden State Warriors beat the Houston Rockets in the first game of the Western Conference Finals. Tonight LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers aim to tie up their series with the Boston Celtics.
