Celtics Beat Cavs into Two-Game Deficit, Lightning Come Back for First Win of Series and Major Sports Leagues Seek Cut of Legal Gambling Money

The Cleveland Cavaliers now face a two-game deficit against the Boston Celtics after losing last night in Boston 107-94. The two teams won’t play again until Saturday in Cleveland, giving them both three days of rest. Despite their deficit, ESPN writes that history shows the Cavs can still come back and win the series:

James has trailed 2-0 six times in his career and has come back to win twice -- the 2016 NBA Finals against the Warriors and the 2007 conference finals against the Pistons, per ESPN Stats & Information research.

Speaking of two-game deficity, the Tampa Bay Lightning got out of theirs by defeating the Capitals in Washington 4-2. Two of their goals were scored on a power play. The first by Steven Stamkos in the first period, and the second by Nikita Kucherov early in the second. A piece on NHL.com describes the strength of the Lightning power play:

“That's been happening a lot for the Lightning. After finishing third in the regular season (23.9 percent) behind the Pittsburgh Penguins (26.2) and Toronto Maple Leafs (25.0), they are 15-for-50 (30.0) on the power play in 13 playoff games, third behind the Boston Bruins (36.4) and Capitals (30.8).”

Representatives from major sports leagues sought a percentage of profits from sports betting in Rhode Island, according to report in the Associated Press. In light of the Supreme Court of the United States ruling to strike down federal law that prohibits sports betting, Rhode Island legislators could change laws to make betting on sports legal. The AP reports:

“Executives from Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association and the PGA Tour went to the statehouse Tuesday to ask for a 0.25-percent “integrity fee” if Rhode Island lawmakers bring sports gambling into the public sphere.”

According to the piece, the leagues felt that because they provide content, they should be eligible for a cut.

“The leagues said they should collect a fee because they create the source of the betting and are responsible for protecting it from fixing.

Senate Finance Committee Chairman William Conley, a Democrat, said he wasn’t convinced by their arguments.”
