Raptors Fire Head Coach, Jets Eliminate Predators and Nadal Breaks
McEnroe’s Record at Madrid Open

The Toronto Raptors have fired head coach
Dwane Casey after seven seasons. This comes after being swept in the
second-round of the playoffs for the second consecutive year by the Cleveland
Cavaliers. ESPN quotes Raptors president Masai Ujiri:

"After careful consideration, I have
decided this is a very difficult but necessary step the franchise must
take," said Raptors president Masai Ujiri via a statement. "As a
team, we are constantly trying to grow and improve in order to get to the next
level. We celebrate everything Dwane has done for the organization, we thank
him, and we wish him nothing but the best in the future. He was instrumental in
creating the identity and culture of who we are as a team, and we are so proud
of that."

Casey
had one year remaining on his contract with the Raptors, worth $6 million.
Casey was
recently voted “coach of the year” by the
National Basketball Coaches Association.

For
the first time in their franchise history, the Winnipeg Jets will play in the
conference finals after knocking out the Nashville Predators 5-1 in game 7 last
night. The Jets were the first to score midway through the first period,
following up with another goal
126 seconds later. The Jets held on to
victory despite goalie Connor Hellebuyck facing 21 shots in the third period
alone.

Rafael
Nadal won his 50th straight set on the same surface, clay, yesterday as he beat
Diego Schwartzman in the third round of the Madrid Open. This breaks the
previous record set by John McEnroe of 49 consecutive sets won on carpet in
1984. The
Associated Press quotes Nadal on the achievement:

“When my career is over, these are things
that are going to be there for always. It’s difficult to be able to win 50 sets
in a row,” Nadal said. “Well, it’s done. It’s over. Let’s not talk about that
anymore and let’s continue on what we have ahead which is what I am concerned
about.”
