Justify Wins Kentucky Derby, Lebron Secures Game 3 Win for Cavs,
Golovkin Defeats Martirosyan, Sharks and Bruins Eliminated
Stocks Mentioned: (NasdaqGS:CHDN)
Favourite Justify won the 144th Kentucky Derby on
Saturday at Churchill Downs (NasdaqGS:CHDN)
in Louisville, Kentucky. Justify started the race strong with just one horse,
Promises Fulfilled, ahead. The two were neck and neck until Justify overtook
Promises Fulfilled going into the ¾ mile at the far turn, then proceeded to win
a 2 ½ -length victory. The Kentucky Derby recap piece sums up the significance of Justify’s win:
“Justify became the first horse to win the Kentucky
Derby without racing as a 2-year-old since Apollo in 1882. He made his debut
Feb. 18 and only one other Derby winner broke his maiden at a later date:
Brokers Tip when he won the Derby on May 6, 1933.
He also became the second horse in the past 100
years to win the Derby with only three career starts prior to the race, joining
Big Brown in 2008.
Justify gave trainer Bob Baffert his fifth Kentucky
Derby victory and jockey Mike Smith his second.”
LeBron James secured the game three win for the
Cleveland Cavaliers over the Toronto Raptors on Saturday with a running
one-handed bank shot at the buzzer. The Raptors are now facing three losses in
the series with no wins. The Associated Press reports:
Game 4 is
Monday night, and the odds are stacked against the rattled Raptors. Of the 129
teams in NBA history to fall behind 3-0, none has come back to win.
Cinco
de Mayo would have given boxing fans more to celebrate if middleweight champion
Gennady Golovkin had the rematch with Canelo Alvarez as originally planned; but
Triple G did not disappoint. The main event on HBO, not a PPV event, gave fans
two rounds of boxing, ending officially at one minute 53 seconds in the second
round. The TKO of Vanes Martirosyan by Triple G was reminiscent of Gennadys’
previous fights before he entered the ring with the likes of Canelo. Golovkin,
with his seek and destroy style, was always a fighter that that gave his fans a
knockout that was sometimes vicious and reckless and usually early in the
fight. It was that reputation that made
it difficult to get an opponent with a big draw name. In his previous fight
with Canelo Alvarez that ended with a controversial draw, he fought a more
technical fight matching and respecting the skillful style of his opponent but
it was a brutal war nonetheless. Golovkin felt he had something to prove to the
world of boxing that night and probably he like many boxing fans, thought he
won the fight. Now boxing fans will be anticipating perhaps a different boxing
event for the rematch with Canelo as the
middleweight champ still holds his title and did it his way.
On
Sunday both the San Jose Sharks and the Boston Bruins were eliminated from the
Stanley Cup playoffs. The Sharks were shut out in their game six matchup
against the Las Vegas Golden Knights and the Bruins suffered a 3-1 loss to the
Tampa Bay Lightning. Tonight the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington
Capitals face off, with the Pens leading the series 3-2, and the Winnipeg Jets
and the Nashville Predators play their sixth game with the Jets leading 3-2.
