North America Wins World Cup Bid, Spain Fires and Hires Head Coach and
Capitals Coach Confident in Returning for Next Season
The U.S., Mexico and Canada will host the 2026 FIFA
World Cup after the joint North American bid comfortably beat out rival Morocco
in a 134-65 vote. President Donald Trump tweeted a congratulation to the three-country coalition, which is the first in
history, despite recent tensions between the U.S. and Canada over tariffs. CNN reports
that 2026 could see the most impressive World Cup ever seen.
The United Bid promises to bring
all three nations closer together for what will be the largest edition of the
tournament to date -- 48 countries will compete -- and the most lucrative. The
North American bid's revenue forecast was $14.3 billion, with a record profit
of $11 billion for FIFA, the sport's governing body.
With this year’s World Cup
kicking off tomorrow, and with only two days until their first match, Spain has
fired head coach Julen Lopetegui and hired former national team player and
Real Madrid captain Fernando Hierro, according to the Associated Press. Spanish
soccer federation president Luis Rubiales explained that Lopetegui was fired
for accepting a position as Real Madrid’s head coach and failing to notify
Spain’s national team in time.
“The
federation cannot be left out of a negotiation by one of its workers and be
informed five minutes before the press release,” Rubiales said. “We have been
compelled to act.”
Rubiales, who
took over as president last month, said Lopetegui disrespected the federation’s
values and it was the only decision he could make.
“It’s a
difficult situation, but we are not the ones who determined the action that had
to be taken. The federation has its values and it has to maintain them,”
Rubiales said. “It may look like a weakness now, but with time this will make
us stronger.”
NHL.com reports that
Washington Capitals’ head coach Barry Trotz has expressed confidence that he
will be coaching the team again next season. Trotz, who is in the final year of
his contract, coached the Capitals to their first ever Stanley Cup victory.
Team general manager Brian MacLellan said Trotz is welcome to return.
"He's
under contract until July 1 and he just won a Stanley Cup,” MacLellan said. “If
he wants to be back, he'll be back."
