Caps Win the Stanley Cup, Nadal vs. Thiem and Halep vs. Stephens in
French Open Final, and Trump “not going to invite” NBA Champions
The Washington Capitals won their first Stanley Cup
last night after a hard fought 4-3 victory over the Las Vegas Golden Knights
last night. Lars Pelly scored the game-winning goal midway through the third
period. The Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin is the first Russian-born captain to win
the Cup. It was his 13th season with the team, and 10th time in the playoffs.
Ovechkin was visibly ecstatic as he hoisted the cup, and was also awarded the Conn Smythe trophy as MVP of the playoffs. NHL.com quotes Ovechkin:
"I can't
explain what I feel," Ovechkin said. "It's unbelievable."
Vegas coach
Gerard Gallant admitted that though his Golden Knights gave a strong effort,
the Capitals earned their victory.
"We
worked hard tonight, we competed hard, just couldn't beat that team. They
deserved the Stanley Cup."
In the French Open, Rafael Nadal is advancing to his 11th final to face
Dominic Thiem after beating Juan Martin del Potro 6-4, 6-1 and 6-2 in the
semifinals. Nadal has never lost once advancing to the finals, having claimed
10 French open titles in his career, a tournament record.
For the
women’s title, Simona Halep and Sloane Stephens face off in the final on
Saturday. The AP quotes Halep on the differences between the two players:
“Well, for
sure, I’m a little bit different because I have more experience. I’m more
relaxed about this situation,” Halep said, sounding convinced of her words as
they hung in the air, until she added this: “But you never know. Every match is
different.”
Stephens said
she has learned to capitalize on chances that come her way.
“I have
matured a little bit and have recognized the opportunities when they have been
presented. I think the most important thing is that I have taken those
opportunities and done a lot with them.”
The White
House-professional sports drama continues with USA Today reporting that President Trump told the press that he had
no intention of celebrating the NBA champions, whoever they may be.
"I didn't invite LeBron James, and I didn't
invite Steph Curry. We're not going to invite either team.”
The president felt differently about the Stanley
Cup winners, however, as he said they were welcome to come for a visit.
"I think we'll have the Caps. We'll see,"
Trump told reporters. "You know, my attitude is if they want to be here,
the greatest place on Earth, I'm here. If they don't want to be here, I don't
want them."
