Uruguay and Iran Win First Matches, Woods Looking Better in Round 2 of
US Open and NY Unlikely to Legalize Betting
Uruguay has won their first World Cup opening match
in 48 years today as they beat Egypt 1-0. The Egyptian team had to bench star
player Mohamed Salah, who scored 44 goals for Liverpool this season, due to a
shoulder injury he experienced in the Champions League final last month.
Iran also cleared a drought by beating Morocco 1-0
to earn their first World Cup match since 1998. Unfortunately this was due to
Morocco’s Aziz Bouhaddouz scoring on his own
net. This is more bad news for Morocco, after their recent loss of hosting the
2026 World Cup to North America. Morocco’s next game is against Portugal on
Wednesday, June 20, followed by Spain on Monday, June 25. BBC Sport quotes Iran’s
coach, Carlos Queiroz, on the toughness of Iran and Morocco’s grouping:
Spain and
Portugal, 10th and fourth in the world rankings respectively, have won four
major tournaments between them in the past 10 years. Before the match, Iran's
coach Carlos Queiroz said his side had been "drawn in the hardest group in
the World Cup".
Tiger Woods
has seen his game improve over a rough start yesterday at his first U.S. Open
since 2015 according to usopen.com.
Tiger Woods’
Round 2 could not have started in a much more different fashion than Thursday’s
Round 1. Woods began the championship by flying his approach over the green on
the par-4 first hole and struggled to a triple-bogey 7. He followed that with a
bogey on the testing par-3 second hole, putting him at 4 over par before he got
to the third tee.
Friday
provided a much better start to the day, as Woods hit his wedge approach shot
to about 3 feet on the 10th hole, his opener, and converted the birdie. He
added a comfortable two-putt par from 18 feet on the par-3 11th, making him
five strokes better in relation to par to start his day. Woods was 7 over for
the championship after two holes, playing with Round 1 co-leader Dustin Johnson
and world No. 2 Justin Thomas. Johnson birdied the 11th to tie for the early
lead with Russell Henley at 2 under.
The New York Post reports that
New York Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie said it is unlikely that the state will
follow New Jersey and Delaware by legalizing sports betting.
“We had a
pretty lengthy conference yesterday and members raised significant issues,”
said Heastie (D-Bronx), whose party controls the Assembly.
“So I would
say at this point, there isn’t enough support within the Democratic conference
to go forward on sports gambling.”
