Senegal is the latest team to be eliminated in the
FIFA World Cup following a 1-0 loss to Colombia today. Colombia’s Yerry Mina
scored the fateful goal against Senegal in the second half. FIFA.com quotes Senegal team reporter Cynthia Nzetia on the team’s elimination:
“It's in the
crucial moments that big teams need to show up. Senegal undoubtedly have great
individual players with skill, but the attack was not at it tonight, and failed
to seize their opportunities. The Senegal team of 2018 will not repeat what the
team of 2002 achieved by qualifying for the knockout round.”
Wayne Rooney, former Manchester United (NYSE:MANU) and England player, has officially completed his move to D.C. United
of the U.S.’s Major League Soccer (MLS). Rooney’s first game will be on July 14
against the Vancouver Whitecaps. ESPN quotes
Rooney on the move:
"It is
fantastic to be joining D.C. United at such an exciting time in the club's
history with the new stadium opening in just a few weeks," Rooney said in
a statement. "Moving to America and MLS fulfills another career ambition
for me. I have the hunger to be a success here and will give D.C. 100 percent
-- as I have always done for every team I have ever played for.”
Though losing
head coach Barry Trotz to the New York Islanders, the Stanley Cup-winning
Washington Capitals have managed to resign forward Devante Smith-Pelly,
according to NHL.com. Though only
posting 16 points in 75 regular season games last year, Smith-Pelly scored
seven goals in the playoffs, helping the Capitals to win their first Stanley
Cup in franchise history. He is signed to a one-year contract for $1 million
USD.
The Associated Press reports that
North and South Korea will combine athletes in canoeing, rowing and women’s
basketball at the upcoming Asian Games. This follows greater cooperation seen
between the two nations in the past year.
“This will be
an historic Asian Games for the Olympic Council of Asia and for the continent
because it will be the first time that North Korea and South Korea will form a
unified team in certain sports. They have marched together before in the
opening ceremony and we are delighted that they are extending their joint
cooperation further in the spirit of unity and friendship,” said Vinod Kumar
Tiwari, the Olympic Council of Asia director of international and National
Olympic Committee relations.
