Egypt’s Salah Back From Injury to Face Russia, Capitals’ Coach Barry Trotz Resigns as Contract Negotiations Fail and Minnesota Added to PGA Tour for 2019

Yesterday’s FIFA World Cup matches saw Sweden beat Korea Republic 1-0, Belgium triumph over Panama 3-0 and England getting the better of Tunisia with a 2-1 victory. Today Japan and Senegal won against Colombia and Poland, respectively, each with a 2-1 final score. Host country Russia is eyeing their second tournament win in a game against Egypt. ESPN reports, however, that Egypt’s star player, Mohamed Salah, will return to play from an injury for today’s match.

Despite having confidence that he would return, the Washington Capitals’ Stanley Cup-winning head coach Barry Trotz stepped down after a contract dispute and is now a free agent, according to the Associated Press. The Capitals’ general manager Brian MacLellan explained that Trotz’s wanting a five-year contract is what made negotiations more difficult.

“His representative wants to take advantage of Barry’s experience and Stanley Cup win and was trying to negotiate a deal that compensates him as one of the better coaches in the league, top four or five coaches. I think the five-year term is probably a sticking point. You have a coach that’s been here four years, you do another five, that’s nine years. There’s not many coaches that have that lasting ability. It’s a long time and it’s a lot of money to be committing to a coach.”

PGATOUR.COM reports that Minnesota will be getting an official PGA tour event, starting in 2019. The event will be hosted by the nonprofit 3M Open Fund and is a seven-year deal.

“3M is honored to welcome the top players on the PGA TOUR to the Twin Cities, and we look forward to the many opportunities this tournament will bring to support our community,” said Paul Keel, 3M senior vice president of Business Development and Marketing-Sales. “We’ve formed a great relationship with PGA TOUR Champions over the last 25 years and are excited to build on that partnership with the 3M Open.”

Mexico Upsets with Win over Germany, Koepka Wins Back-to-Back US Opens, So Yeon Ryu Wins Meijer LPGA Classic and Allgaier Wins Xfinity Race in Iowa

Stocks discussed: (NYSE:DVD)

Mexico scored an upset victory over 2014 World Cup holders Germany yesterday, with a 1-0 win. Hirving Lozano scored the winning goal early on  in a counter attack but the Germans were unable to come back. FIFA.com quotes Germany’s coach Joachim Löw on the team’s surprising loss:

"In the first half we played very badly. We were not able to impose our usual way of playing attacking and our passing. In the second half we were able to press match but Mexico also pulled back.

"We had a couple of shots on the goal but somehow it seemed jinxed, the ball didn’t go into the net. Of course everyone is unhappy and crestfallen. We have to look forwards, put this behind us. We have to win the next match, it goes without saying. We’re under pressure against Sweden."

Mexico plays next on Saturday, June 23 against Korea Republic and Germany faces off against Sweden the same day. Sweden just beat Korea Republic 1-0 this morning.

Brooks Koepka beat Tommy Fleetwood yesterday to win his second US Open in a row. The last player to win back-to-back at US Opens was Curtis Strange in 1988-89. usopen.com quotes Koepka on the victory:

“It sounds incredible,” said Koepka of being a multiple U.S. Open champion. “To be honest with you, I probably couldn’t have dreamed of it in my wildest dreams. I’m at a loss for words right now, but it’s really incredible. I couldn’t be happier.”

South Korean player So Yeon Ryu beat Caroline Masson with a two-stroke victory to win the Meijer LPGA Classic yesterday.

Justin Allgaier beat Christopher Bell yesterday to win NASCAR’s Xfinity Series Race in Iowa with 182 of 250 laps. Autoweek quotes Allgaier, who also won the Dover (NYSE:DVD) Xfinity Race last month:

“Incredible. We’re in the middle of cornfields; how could you not enjoy this? … Doing it on Father’s Day, it was really cool having my daughter here.”

#PlaybyPlay; Uruguay and Iran Win First Matches, Woods Looking Better in Round 2 of #USOpen and NY Unlikely to Legalize Betting

Stocks discussed: (NYSE: $RCI) (NasdaqGS: $ATVI) (NYSE: $TWTR)

Point Roberts, WA, Delta BC –June 15, 2018 - Investorideas.com, a leader in investor news and research issues today’s edition of Play by Play covering what’s new in sports headlines and recent news from publicly traded companies in the sector.

Uruguay and Iran Win First Matches, Woods Looking Better in Round 2 of US Open and NY Unlikely to Legalize Betting

Uruguay has won their first World Cup opening match in 48 years today as they beat Egypt 1-0. The Egyptian team had to bench star player Mohamed Salah, who scored 44 goals for Liverpool this season, due to a shoulder injury he experienced in the Champions League final last month.

Iran also cleared a drought by beating Morocco 1-0 to earn their first World Cup match since 1998. Unfortunately this was due to Morocco’s Aziz Bouhaddouz scoring on his own net. This is more bad news for Morocco, after their recent loss of hosting the 2026 World Cup to North America. Morocco’s next game is against Portugal on Wednesday, June 20, followed by Spain on Monday, June 25. BBC Sport quotes Iran’s coach, Carlos Queiroz, on the toughness of Iran and Morocco’s grouping:

Spain and Portugal, 10th and fourth in the world rankings respectively, have won four major tournaments between them in the past 10 years. Before the match, Iran's coach Carlos Queiroz said his side had been "drawn in the hardest group in the World Cup".

Tiger Woods has seen his game improve over a rough start yesterday at his first U.S. Open since 2015 according to usopen.com.

Tiger Woods’ Round 2 could not have started in a much more different fashion than Thursday’s Round 1. Woods began the championship by flying his approach over the green on the par-4 first hole and struggled to a triple-bogey 7. He followed that with a bogey on the testing par-3 second hole, putting him at 4 over par before he got to the third tee.

Friday provided a much better start to the day, as Woods hit his wedge approach shot to about 3 feet on the 10th hole, his opener, and converted the birdie. He added a comfortable two-putt par from 18 feet on the par-3 11th, making him five strokes better in relation to par to start his day. Woods was 7 over for the championship after two holes, playing with Round 1 co-leader Dustin Johnson and world No. 2 Justin Thomas. Johnson birdied the 11th to tie for the early lead with Russell Henley at 2 under.

The New York Post reports that New York Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie said it is unlikely that the state will follow New Jersey and Delaware by legalizing sports betting.

“We had a pretty lengthy conference yesterday and members raised significant issues,” said Heastie (D-Bronx), whose party controls the Assembly.
“So I would say at this point, there isn’t enough support within the Democratic conference to go forward on sports gambling.”

Russia Beats Saudi Arabia in First Game of World Cup, Conor McGregor Appears in Court and Sports Betting is Now Legal in New Jersey

FIFA World Cup host Russia has claimed victory in the first game of the tournament over Saudi Arabia, scoring 5-0. This is not only the first win of World Cup 2018, but Russia’s first win since 2002. FIFA.com quotes Saudi Arabia head coach Juan Antonio Pizzi’s reaction to the loss:

"It was a tough game and we suffered a big and unexpected defeat. Russia did very well, while we did not appear to be in good shape. I don't believe that the opposing team has done anything to surprise us - I think that a poor performance explains the result. As for our strategy, we must change. We have to forget about it now and think of the next match. I have confidence in these players."

Russia will next play on Tuesday, June 19 against Egypt and Saudi Arabia’s next match is against Uruguay on Wednesday, June 20.

UFC star Conor McGregor appeared in a Brooklyn court today to address charges against himself and co-defendant Cian Cowley for a violent incident the two were involved in on April 5 at the Barclays Center. The incident involved the two in a backstage melee following a press day for UFC 223. Video footage from the brawl showed McGregor throwing a dolly at a bus, which broke a window and injured some UFC fighters inside. McGregor’s manager, Audia Attar, told MMA Fighting that future fighting plans are not currently under consideration and that the charges take precedence.

“Today we’re here to focus on court, we’re not going to focus on any future plans until we handle this matter,” Attar said. ”Right now we’re in good negotiations with the district attorney, so we’re going to focus on that and we’ll focus on the future later.”

NJ.com reports that New Jersey governor, Phil Murphy, has kicked off legal sports betting in the state by placing two $20 bets.

"I'm betting $20 on Germany to win the World Cup, and $20 on the New Jersey Devils to win Lord Stanley's cup," Murphy said before placing the bet at about 10:33 a.m.

This follows Delaware’s legalization on June 5, with Gov. John Carney placing that state’s first legal bet.
