LeBron a Free Agent, Weekend Sees Knockout Phase of World Cup Begin and
Mets GM on ‘Indefinite Leave’
LeBron James will become an unrestricted free agent
after declining to pick up the player option on the final year of his contract
with the Cleveland Cavaliers, ESPN reports. The piece indicates that with James
possibly leaving the Cavs, it could result in the creation of a “superteam” should
he join the Los Angeles Laker, Houston Rockets or Philadelphia 76ers. Free
agency begins on Sunday and players cannot sign a contract until July 6. James,
however, is taking time off with his family and it remains to be seen when or
if he will handle meetings in person.
James is
currently on vacation with his family in Anguilla, and it is unclear whether he
will return in time to take personal meetings with potential suitors this
weekend or if he will allow his representatives, led by agents Rich Paul and
Mark Termini of Klutch Sports, to run those meetings in his absence.
The final
match of the Group Phase in the FIFA World Cup saw England losing their first
game 1-0 to Belgium, who finished with three wins. Adnan Januzaj scored the
lone goal and was named the Budweiser Man
of the Match.
The Knockout
Phase of the FIFA World Cup begins tomorrow, with Thursday being the final day
of the Group Phase. The first round of matches on Saturday will include Uruguay
vs. Portugal and France vs. Argentina, and on Sunday Spain vs. Russia and
Croatia vs. Denmark.
The AP reports that New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson announced he
was stepping down due to the return of his cancer. The 70-year-old GM has been
replaced by three of his assistants – John Ricco, J.P. Ricciardi and Omar
Minaya – as the Mets nearing the bottom of the National League (32-46).
“We’re well
below our expectations, from ownership on down,” chief operating officer Jeff
Wilpon said. “Talk to the baseball department, talk to the scouting department,
talk to the development department, coaches, the players — nobody expected to
be in this position.”
