McGregor Pleads Guilty, Avoids Jail Time, Démare Takes Stage 18 but Thomas Still Leads Tour de France, Ledecky Wins 800m at U.S. Swimming Championships and Triple Crown Winner Justify Retires

UFC star Conor McGregor has pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and avoided possible jail time, according to the BBC. McGregor was involved in an altercation at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on April 5 for which he faced 12 criminal charges including: menacing, assault resulting in injury, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief. Following the judgement, McGregor’s manager, Audie Attar said the fighter would be focusing on getting back into fighting.
"Now that this is passed us, we can focus on things that have been on hold for some time," said Mr Attar.
"Conor's been training. He's in shape. He's ready to go. Now it's just about getting back to business and we hope to have some news to announce very soon."

French cyclist Arnaud Démare has won stage 18 at the Tour de France. This marks his second career Tour stage win and the first this year. According to Sky Sports, Geraint Thomas still holds his lead at one minute and 59 seconds.

Katie Ledecky won by 10 seconds in the 800m freestyle at the U.S. Swimming Championships according to NBC Sports. The five-time gold medal winner finished 7.19 seconds slower than her world record of 8:11.98.

“I’m fine with it, didn’t feel super sharp, but it always takes me a little bit of time to get into these meets,” Ledecky said, noting swimming in 80-degree heat. “My best races are when the first 400 and the second 400 are pretty even.”

This year’s Triple Crown winner Justify is retiring from racing according to the Associated Press. Fluid found in his left front ankle has raised concerns about his health if he were to continue racing.

“The timing is bad for another start in 2018, and therefore, we have to retire him,” said Elliott Walden of WinStar Farm, which co-owns Justify. “Like (2015 Triple Crown winner) American Pharoah, we can’t take the risk of running Justify as a 4-year-old. We all wanted him to finish his career in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, but it was not meant to be.”

Quintana takes Grueling Stage 17 at Tour de France, Cavs Sign Love to 4-Year Extension Worth $120 Million and Mets’ Cespedes Off for 8-10 Months for Heel Surgery

Colombian rider Nairo Quintana took stage 17 of the Tour de France today, his first win of this year’s race, according to a report on ESPN. The 65 km stage, ending at Saint-Lary-Soulan, though being the shortest of the Tour so far this century, is very grueling and features three category one climbs. The stage win puts Quintana at number five overall. Still in first place overall is Welsh rider Geraint Thomas, who came in third today.

The Cleveland Cavaliers signed All-Star Kevin Love to a four-year $120 million extension, according to the Associated Press. Love sported a hard hat as he signed the contract in front of dozens of construction workers at the Cavs’ Quicken Loans Arena, which is undergoing a $140 million renovation. Love addressed the uncertainties around his status with the team and expressed gratitude for signing the extension.

“I look back, everything happens for a reason,” Love said. “My best friend from back home said, ‘It always works out.’ This is where I wanted to be. I’ve said that all along. There were some tough times where potentially I would have been traded and my name came up in rumors every few months. But hopefully that ends now.”

New York Mets’ outfielder Yoenis Cespedes will be out of play for at least 8 to 10 months to undergo surgery on both heels, according to a report on Newsday. The two-time All Star needs the surgery to repair calcification around his Achilles tendons. John Ricco, one of the Mets’ three acting general managers, said Cespedes’ condition was contributing to other issues as well.

“The concern on our end was not only the pain he was in, but also the fact that it was contributing to him altering his running style and therefore, leading to some of these other leg issues,” Ricco said. “And you get to the point where that doesn’t make any sense because you’re going to stay in that cycle.”

Take-Two’s 2K Announced Wooooo! Edition of WWE® 2K19 Celebrating Ric Flair and lululemon Appoints New CEO

Take-Two Interactive Software Inc.’s (NasdaqGS:TTWO) 2K has announced the Wooooo! Edition of WWE® 2K19 in honour of 16-time WWE World Champion Ric Flair.
“For all of my fans around the world, it’s exciting and humbling to see my career immortalized through the power of video games,” said Ric Flair. “This is going to be one stylin,’ profilin,’ limousine riding, jet flying, kiss-stealing, wheelin’ ‘n’ dealin’ son of a collector’s edition, and you don’t want to miss out. Wooooo!”

lululemon athletica, inc. (NasdaqGS:LULU) has appointed Calvin McDonald as Chief Executive Officer, effective August 20, 2018. Previously, Mcdonald served as President and CEO of Americas for Sephora.

Kisner Leads Round One at the Open, Sagan Wins Stage 13 at Tour but Thomas Maintains Lead, NFL Anthem Policy Suspended and AC Milan Ruled Back in the Europa League

The Express reports that Kevin Kisner finished first, shooting five-under par with 66 in round one of The Open 2018 at Carnoustie. Erik van Rooyen, Tony Finau and Zander Lombard all trailed by one shot and Tiger Woods, who hasn’t played the British Open since 2015, finished five shots behind.

Round two is still in play at press time, but so far Kevin Kisner holds on to the lead with Zach Johnson according to the leaderboard at The Open.

Slovak cyclist Peter Sagan has won stage 13 at the Tour de France, his third of this year’s race, according to BBC Sport. Sagan edged out riders Alexander Kristoff of Norway and  Frenchman Arnaud Demare.

"This stage was a piece of gold for us," said Sagan. "Everyone in the group recovered and I think everyone is happy it was a relaxed stage. I was a bit late, a little bit behind in the last 600m but I stayed on the wheel of Kristoff and I'm very happy to beat them."

British riders Geraint Thomas and Chris Froome of Team Sky still hold the number one and two positions overall, respectively.

The NFL’s national anthem policy from May, which forbade players and staff from “taking a knee” while the Star-Spangled Banner was being played, is no longer in effect, according to the Washington Post. The decision is a result of dialogue between the NFL and the NFL Players Association (NFLPA). The two released a joint statement which read:

“The NFL and NFLPA, through recent discussions, have been working on a resolution to the anthem issue. In order to allow this constructive dialogue to continue, we have come to a standstill agreement on the NFLPA’s grievance and on the NFL’s anthem policy. No new rules relating to the anthem will be issued or enforced for the next several weeks while these confidential discussions are ongoing.”

The Court for Arbitration of Sport has ruled that AC Milan is back in the Europa League after having been banned for overspending, according to the Associated Press. The Court conceded that the Union of European Football Association (UEFA), who banned AC Milan, were right in judging that the seven-time European champion team had overspent, but that the punishment was “not proportionate”.
