McGregor Pleads Guilty, Avoids Jail Time, Démare Takes Stage 18 but
Thomas Still Leads Tour de France, Ledecky Wins 800m at U.S. Swimming
Championships and Triple Crown Winner Justify Retires
UFC star Conor McGregor has pleaded guilty to
disorderly conduct and avoided possible jail time, according to the BBC.
McGregor was involved in an altercation at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on April
5 for which he faced 12 criminal charges including: menacing, assault resulting in injury, reckless
endangerment and criminal mischief. Following the judgement, McGregor’s
manager, Audie Attar said the fighter would be focusing on getting back into
fighting.
"Now that
this is passed us, we can focus on things that have been on hold for some
time," said Mr Attar.
"Conor's
been training. He's in shape. He's ready to go. Now it's just about getting
back to business and we hope to have some news to announce very soon."
French cyclist
Arnaud Démare has won stage 18 at the Tour de France. This marks his second
career Tour stage win and the first this year. According to Sky Sports, Geraint
Thomas still holds his lead at one minute and 59 seconds.
Katie Ledecky
won by 10 seconds in the 800m freestyle at the U.S. Swimming Championships
according to NBC Sports. The
five-time gold medal winner finished 7.19 seconds slower than her world record
of 8:11.98.
“I’m fine with
it, didn’t feel super sharp, but it always takes me a little bit of time to get
into these meets,” Ledecky said, noting swimming in 80-degree heat. “My best
races are when the first 400 and the second 400 are pretty even.”
This year’s
Triple Crown winner Justify is retiring from racing according to the Associated Press. Fluid found
in his left front ankle has raised concerns about his health if he were to
continue racing.
“The timing is
bad for another start in 2018, and therefore, we have to retire him,” said
Elliott Walden of WinStar Farm, which co-owns Justify. “Like (2015 Triple Crown
winner) American Pharoah, we can’t take the risk of running Justify as a
4-year-old. We all wanted him to finish his career in the Breeders’ Cup
Classic, but it was not meant to be.”
