Roglic takes Stage 19 of Tour de France with Thomas Coming Second,
Garrigus Leads First Day of Canadian Open, US Swimming Championship Day 2
Results and Valcke’s 10-Year FIFA Ban Upheld
Slovenian cyclist Primoz Roglic has taken stage 19,
the final high mountain stage of the Tour de France. Race frontrunner Geraint
Thomas came in second to consolidate his position going into the final two days
over the weekend.
American Robert Garrigus lead the way with 9-under
63 at the opening day of the Canadian Open at Glen Abbey Golf Course in
Oakville, Ontario. The Canadian Open website explains that the players were plagued by rain, high winds and
potential lightning strikes which delayed play and prevented 55 golfers from
finishing the first round.
“Could have
been 59 there if a couple putts didn’t lip out,” said Garrigus, who had birdie
putts lip out on Nos. 10 and 17. “Got lucky on the par 5, on 13, hit it right
in the middle of the water, and it hit a rock and bounced over the thing and I
made birdie.
According to Swim Swam, Day 2 of the
U.S. Swimming Championships saw Katie Ledecky take gold in the Women’s 200
Free, Andrew Seliskar for the Men’s 200 Free, Micah Sumrall for the Women’s 200
Breast, Josh Prenot for the Men’s 200 Breast, Regan Smith and Kathleen Baker
tied for the Women’s 200 Back, Ryan Murphy for the Men’s 200 Back, Kelsi Dahlia
for the Women’s 50 Fly and Michael Andrew for the Men’s 50 Fly.
The Court of
Arbitration of Sport upheld former FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke’s
10-year ban today, according to the Associated Press. Valcke was
fired in 2016 after “being implicated in irregular World Cup ticket and
broadcast rights sales, plus expense abuses including personal use of private
jets.”
“The offenses
found to have been committed by Jerome Valcke were cumulatively of a serious
degree of gravity,” CAS said in its statement, adding the ban and fine of
100,000 Swiss francs ($100,200) “were wholly proportionate.”
