MLB Trade Deadline Ends, Williams Out in Surprising Loss at Stanford
Classic, Wawrinka’s Comeback Falters with Loss at Washington Open and Digne
Signs with Everton
The MLB trade
deadline ended yesterday. Some
significant transactions on the last day include the Atlanta Braves acquisition
of Kevin Gausman from the Baltimore Orioles, the Pittsburgh Pirates’
acquisition of Chris Archer from the Tampa Bay Rays and the Los Angeles Dodgers
acquisition of Brian Dozier from the Minnesota Twins.
Serena Williams shocked viewers with an
uncharacteristic defeat in her opening match of the Stanford Classic, sponsored
by Mubadala Investment Company, last night according to the Associated Press. British player Johanna Konta beat the 23 Grand Slam-winning Williams
6-1, 6-0.
“I know I can
play a zillion times better so that kind of helps out, too. I have so many
things on my mind I don’t have time to be shocked about a loss that clearly
wasn’t at my best right now,” Williams said. “When I was out there, was
fighting. That’s the only thing I can say, I wasn’t just like giving it away
and I was moving a lot better. So I’m just trying to take the positives out of
it.”
Former #3 in
the world tennis star Stan Wawrinka lost 4-6 7-6 6-7 loss to American Donald
Young at the Washington Open yesterday, the AP reports.
Wawrinka is struggling in a comeback year after going through knee surgery in
2017.
“I was missing
a lot. Not feeling the way I wanted. I’m looking for confidence, for sure. It’s
tough to not win a lot of matches. Then you start to think too much on the
court.”
BBC Sport reports that
Lucas Digne has been signed by Everton from Barcelona for a five-year deal
worth £18 million. The 25-year-old Digne will be playing in his fourth country
in the last three years having previously played in France for Paris
Saint-Germain and Italy for Roma.
"Everton
is a big club with a great history. I want to play games, win games and excite
the fans with the quality of our football," Digne said."I want to
show my best football here and discover the best league in the world. Everybody
loves the Premier League. I am loving the fact I am coming here.”
