Koepka Wins PGA Championship with Woods Close Behind with Epic Comeback, Nadal Captures 4th Rogers Cup in Toronto, Harvick Wins NASCAR Series Cup at Michigan and Messi’s Barcelona Earns Spanish Super Cup Victory

Brooks Koepka won his third career major yesterday after holding off resurgent Tiger Woods to capture the 2018 PGA Championship at Bellerive Country Club in Missouri. Koepka finished with 16 under 264, setting a new PGA Championship scoring record. Woods came in second by two strokes with 14 under par, setting a personal best for closing round at a major. The Associated Press quotes Woods on the final major of his comeback season:

“I had to kind of figure this out on my own and it’s been really hard — a lot harder than people think,” he said. “And I’m just very pleased at what I’ve done so far ... going from where I’ve come from, to now over the last year, it’s been pretty cool.”

Rafael Nadal won his 80th ATP World Tour title yesterday as he defeated Greek player Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2, 7-6 (4) at the Rogers Cup in Toronto. This is Nadal’s fourth Rogers Cup, after winning previously in Toronto in 2008 and in Montreal in 2005 and 2013, according to the AP. He has won 33 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles.

Kevin Harvick won the Consumers Energy 400 yesterday at the Michigan International Speedway. The victory marks Harvick’s seventh win of the season and ties him with Bill Elliott at 17th of all time for NASCAR Cup Series wins with 44. USA Today quotes Harvick on having his son Keelan wave the checkered flag from the passenger seat:

"It's pretty cool to look over on your victory lap and see your 6-year-old in the passenger's seat and being able to enjoy it with you," Harvick said. "That was definitely way up there on the bucket list."

Football (soccer) superstar Lionel Messi recorded his 33rd title yesterday as Barcelona beat Sevilla 2-1 in the Spanish Super Cup in Morocco, according to BBC Sport. Ousmane Dembélé scored the winning goal for Barcelona in the 79th minute, earning Barcelona their sixth win at the Spanish Super Cup in the last nine years.

Woodland Leads First Round at PGA Championship, NFL Players Kneel - President and League Respond, Both Koreas to Work Together for Asian Games and Coyotes Sign Dvorak to 6 Year Extension

Round one of the 100th PGA Championship at Bellerive saw Gary Woodland finish first with 64. Inside the top three were Rickie Fowler, with fiver under par, and Zach Johnson, with three under, according to Golfworld. At press time, the leaderboard on golfchannel.com shows three Americans, Gary Woodland and Kevin Kisner, each with nine under, and Brooks Koepka with seven under making up the top three overall.

During yesterday’s NFL preseason games some players chose to kneel, raise a fist or go to the locker room during the playing of the national anthem, according to ABC. This prompted a Twitter response from President Trump as well as a statement from the league outlining their current decision to delay discipline for breaking the national anthem policy:

"The NFL has been engaged in constructive discussions with the NFL Players Association regarding the anthem and issues of equality and social justice that are of concern to many Americans. While those discussions continue, the NFL has agreed to delay implementing or enforcing any club work rules that could result in players being disciplined for their conduct during the performance of the anthem.”

North and South Korea will march together in the Asian Games opening ceremony in Indonesia, according to the Associated Press. The two countries will also combine athletic talent in their joint basketball, canoeing and rowing teams. Kim Seong-jo, vice chairman of South Korea’s Olympic committee, outlined the importance of sports in bringing the two estranged countries together.

“Sports have played the role of peacemaker between the Koreas. If the combined teams put out good performances and win medals, that would be putting the cherry on the top.”

ESPN reports that the Arizona Coyotes have signed 22-year-old forward Christian Dvorak to a six-year extension. Dvorak, who earned a career-high 37 points last season, will make an annual average of $4.45 million under the new contract.

"I am very happy to sign a long-term contract with the Coyotes," Dvorak said in a statement. "We have a great young team with a bright future and I love living and playing in the Valley. I'm excited to be a Coyote for the next seven years."

Electronic Arts’ (NasdaqGS:EA) EA SPORTS Madden NFL 19 was launched today on Origin for PC, Xbox One and Playstation 4 with many new features. The game’s executive producer, Roy Harvey, commented on the launch:
“This is my favorite time of year, since Madden NFL 19 serves as the unofficial kickoff to football season. The team has included many new features to gameplay, Franchise, Ultimate Team and more, all of which I believe our fans will enjoy for countless hours throughout the year.”

NIKE Inc.’s (NYSE:NKE) Board of Directors declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.20 per share on the company’s outstanding Class A and Class B common stock payable on October 1, 2018 to shareholders of record at the close of business on September 4, 2018.

100th PGA Championship Begins, Raiders’ Carr Happy to Have Gruden as Head Coach and Canadian Taylor Ruck Wins Gold Ahead of U.S. Star Ledecky

The 100th edition of the PGA Championship began this morning at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, MO. This is the final year that it will be held in August as the fourth and last of the major championships in professional golf, as starting next year it will be held in the middle of May. Defending champion Justin Thomas is playing against the likes of  Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Tiger Woods, who is eyeing his 15th major win as he continues a comeback year, and more. At press time, round one sees Americans Rickie Fowler, Justin Thomas and Stewart Cink at the top of the leaderboard with three under par each, according to golfchannel.com.

ESPN reports that Oakland Raiders’ quarterback Derek Carr is grateful to the organization for getting Jon Gruden back as head coach. Carr, who finished tied for third in 2016’s NFL MVP voting, had a disappointing season last year as his QBR went from 54.6 to 47.2. Carr says that Gruden coaching style did not exempt him from scrutiny because of his star status.

"The way he demands from me, he gets after me, just like he gets after everybody else," Carr said. "If I screw up, he lets me know it, in front of everybody. And it just makes an openness about our team... there's no secrets, man. If I screwed it up, I screwed it up, no problem. But at the same time, he is the same guy telling each and every one of his players -- you will catch him just after practice, if you just watch him -- if he yelled at someone, he is going to go grab them, 'Man, I love you, man, the reason I am getting after you is because I see this and this in you,' and so anybody who has played for him, anyone who knows him, they want to run through a brick wall for the guy."

Canadian swimmer Taylor Ruck won gold and set a new meet record in the women’s 200-metre freestyle in Tokyo on day one of the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, according to CBC Sports. The win was an upset as Ruck beat out American favourite Katie Ledecky, who came third. Ruck’s time of one minute 54.44 seconds also beat Ledecky’s previous record from 2014 by 1.3 seconds. Ruck said her coach advised her to keep focused, so as not to be put off by Ledecky’s formidable reputation.

"It's the name, I guess, because she is the fastest woman on the planet in a lot of races," said Ruck, who was born in Kelowna, B.C. "My coach kind of saw that, so he told me to focus on my lane and my race."

Speedway Motorsports Announces “Weather Guarantee” and Hibbett Sports Partner with Comedian Jermaine “Funnymaine” Johnson for Collection
Stocks discussed: (NYSE:TRK) (NasdaqGS:HIBB)

Speedway Motorsports (NYSE:TRK) has announced a weather guarantee, wherein “if a NASCAR race is postponed due to weather and the ticket holder is unable to attend on the rescheduled date, a ticket credit can be issued toward a qualifying NASCAR race at any Speedway Motorsports venue”.

Hibbett Sports (NasdaqGS:HIBB) has partnered with comedian, Jermaine "Funnymaine" Johnson aka "The Bama fan on the couch" as the exclusive Funnymaine Collection licensed apparel in-store retail partner. Sarah Sharp-Wangaard, Hibbett Sports’ VP of Marketing said of the partnership:
"We have been sponsors of Alabama football for years and Jermaine "Funnymaine" Johnson captures the essence of what it is to be a true Alabama football fan. We are excited to have him visit with fans at our Shaker Shack during select home games and make his iconic and fun apparel available to Hibbett customers."
