Woodland Leads First Round at PGA Championship, NFL Players Kneel - President and League Respond, Both Koreas to Work Together for Asian Games and Coyotes Sign Dvorak to 6 Year Extension

Round one of the 100th PGA Championship at Bellerive saw Gary Woodland finish first with 64. Inside the top three were Rickie Fowler, with fiver under par, and Zach Johnson, with three under, according to Golfworld. At press time, the leaderboard on golfchannel.com shows three Americans, Gary Woodland and Kevin Kisner, each with nine under, and Brooks Koepka with seven under making up the top three overall.

During yesterday’s NFL preseason games some players chose to kneel, raise a fist or go to the locker room during the playing of the national anthem, according to ABC. This prompted a Twitter response from President Trump as well as a statement from the league outlining their current decision to delay discipline for breaking the national anthem policy:

"The NFL has been engaged in constructive discussions with the NFL Players Association regarding the anthem and issues of equality and social justice that are of concern to many Americans. While those discussions continue, the NFL has agreed to delay implementing or enforcing any club work rules that could result in players being disciplined for their conduct during the performance of the anthem.”

North and South Korea will march together in the Asian Games opening ceremony in Indonesia, according to the Associated Press. The two countries will also combine athletic talent in their joint basketball, canoeing and rowing teams. Kim Seong-jo, vice chairman of South Korea’s Olympic committee, outlined the importance of sports in bringing the two estranged countries together.

“Sports have played the role of peacemaker between the Koreas. If the combined teams put out good performances and win medals, that would be putting the cherry on the top.”

ESPN reports that the Arizona Coyotes have signed 22-year-old forward Christian Dvorak to a six-year extension. Dvorak, who earned a career-high 37 points last season, will make an annual average of $4.45 million under the new contract.

"I am very happy to sign a long-term contract with the Coyotes," Dvorak said in a statement. "We have a great young team with a bright future and I love living and playing in the Valley. I'm excited to be a Coyote for the next seven years."
