Raptors Name Assistant Nick Nurse as Head Coach, Dwane Casey Signs 5-Year Contract as Pistons’ Coach, Warriors Eager to Re-sign Durant and New Jersey Legalizes Sports Betting

The Toronto Raptors have named assistant coach Nick Nurse as their new head coach according to the Associated Press. The AP quotes Nurse talking about former Raptors coach Dwane Casey, under whom he worked for five seasons.

“I’ve learned a lot about preparation from him, the seriousness of attention to detail,” Nurse told Canada’s Sportsnet in February. “He’s been around the league a long time and he’s seen it all. That’s the biggest thing. We have to prepare the players and can’t leave any stone unturned. We have to know everything the other team is doing and really work hard and grind it out.”

As for Casey, ESPN reports today that he has signed a five-year contract to be the head coach of the Detroit Pistons. Casey said in an interview on ESPN Radio that in moving to Detroit he would be taking on more than just the coaching job:

"They have a good team, they have a good roster and a very dynamic owner in Tom Gores, who is doing a lot of things for the city of Detroit," Casey said. "It's a little bit more than just coaching basketball ... that appealed to me also and to my family. Doing a lot of stuff in the community, rebuilding downtown, helping out Flint in their water situation -- so just a lot more things involved, more than just basketball."

The AP reports that Bob Myers, general manager of the NBA championship-winning Golden State Warriors, is eager to sign a new deal with star Kevin Durant.

“Sometimes you don’t negotiate. I’d love to have him for 10 years. Kevin Durant, look what he did for us last year, he did us a great service,” Myers said. “He’s earned the right to sign whatever deal he wants. I just want him to sign a deal. But want him to be happy and want him to know that we want him as long as he wants to be here. He’s earned that, to kind of lay out the terms. He can do whatever he wants. That shouldn’t be a long negotiation. Our goal, to be honest, is to try to keep the whole thing together, so that’s the pieces of the puzzle we’ve got to try to figure out.”

New Jersey governor Philip D. Murphy signed a bill yesterday legalizing sports betting according to the New York Times.

“Today, we’re finally making the dream of legalized sports betting a reality for New Jersey. It means that our casinos in Atlantic City and our racetracks throughout our state can attract new business and new fans, boosting their own long-term financial prospects. This is the right move for New Jersey and it will strengthen our economy.”

Justify Wins Triple Crown, Golden State Sweeps Cleveland for Championship and Nadal Wins 11th French Open

Justify became the 13th Triple-Crown winner in history after an exhilarating Belmont Stakes victory on Saturday. Taking the lead immediately, Justify stuck it out for 2 minutes and 28.18 seconds to win by a length and three quarters. Justify is only the second undefeated Triple Crown winner after Seattle Slew in 1977 and is trainer Bob Baffert’s second Triple Crown winner after American Pharoah in 2015. The New York Times quotes jockey Mike Smith on the win:

“This horse ran a tremendous race. He’s so gifted; he was sent from heaven. I can’t even begin to describe my emotions right now.”

The Golden State Warriors won their second straight NBA Championship and third in four years on Friday night with a decisive 108-85 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs, who got swept in the finals with four straight losses, may face the loss of star LeBron James, as he has until June 29 to decide whether or not to opt out of the final year of his contract. ESPN quotes James on what would influence his decision:

“I've got a teenage boy, a preteen and a little girl that wasn't around as well. So sitting down and considering everything, my family is a huge part of whatever I'll decide to do in my career, and it will continue to be that. So I don't have an answer for you right now as far as that."

Rafael Nadal won his 11th French Open yesterday, beating Dominic Thiem 6-4, 6-3 and 6-2. According to the Associated Press, Nadal told Thiem “I am sure you will win here in the next couple of years,” after the match.

“There is a reason why he won 11 times here,” said Thiem. “It’s definitely one of the best things somebody ever achieved in sport.”

#PlaybyPlay; #Caps Win the #StanleyCup, Nadal vs. Thiem and Halep vs. Stephens in #FrenchOpen Final, and #Trump “not going to invite” #NBA Champions

Stocks discussed: (NasdaqGS: $LULU) (NasdaqGS: $ZUMZ)

Caps Win the Stanley Cup, Nadal vs. Thiem and Halep vs. Stephens in French Open Final, and Trump “not going to invite” NBA Champions

The Washington Capitals won their first Stanley Cup last night after a hard fought 4-3 victory over the Las Vegas Golden Knights last night. Lars Pelly scored the game-winning goal midway through the third period. The Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin is the first Russian-born captain to win the Cup. It was his 13th season with the team, and 10th time in the playoffs. Ovechkin was visibly ecstatic as he hoisted the cup, and was also awarded the Conn Smythe trophy as MVP of the playoffs. NHL.com quotes Ovechkin:

"I can't explain what I feel," Ovechkin said. "It's unbelievable."

Vegas coach Gerard Gallant admitted that though his Golden Knights gave a strong effort, the Capitals earned their victory.

"We worked hard tonight, we competed hard, just couldn't beat that team. They deserved the Stanley Cup."

In the French Open, Rafael Nadal is advancing to his 11th final to face Dominic Thiem after beating Juan Martin del Potro 6-4, 6-1 and 6-2 in the semifinals. Nadal has never lost once advancing to the finals, having claimed 10 French open titles in his career, a tournament record.

For the women’s title, Simona Halep and Sloane Stephens face off in the final on Saturday. The AP quotes Halep on the differences between the two players:

“Well, for sure, I’m a little bit different because I have more experience. I’m more relaxed about this situation,” Halep said, sounding convinced of her words as they hung in the air, until she added this: “But you never know. Every match is different.”

Stephens said she has learned to capitalize on chances that come her way.

“I have matured a little bit and have recognized the opportunities when they have been presented. I think the most important thing is that I have taken those opportunities and done a lot with them.”

The White House-professional sports drama continues with USA Today reporting that President Trump told the press that he had no intention of celebrating the NBA champions, whoever they may be.

"I didn't invite LeBron James, and I didn't invite Steph Curry. We're not going to invite either team.”

The president felt differently about the Stanley Cup winners, however, as he said they were welcome to come for a visit.

"I think we'll have the Caps. We'll see," Trump told reporters. "You know, my attitude is if they want to be here, the greatest place on Earth, I'm here. If they don't want to be here, I don't want them."

#PlaybyPlay; Durant an “Assassin” as #Warriors Take 3-0 Series Lead Over #Cavs, #MLB Hall-of-Famer Red Schoendienst Dies at 95 and Terrell Owens Won’t Attend Hall of Fame Induction

Durant an “Assassin” as Warriors Take 3-0 Series Lead Over Cavs, MLB Hall-of-Famer Red Schoendienst Dies at 95 and Terrell Owens Won’t Attend Hall of Fame Induction

The Cleveland Cavaliers now trail three games in the NBA finals after losing to the Golden State Warriors 110-102 last night. The star of the game was Kevin Durant, who scored a career playoff-high of 43 points. Cavs superstar LeBron James acknowledged Durant’s performance and ability, calling him an “assassin” while speaking to the press after the game.

“He’s one of the best players I’ve ever played against,” he said. “He's an assassin, and that was one of those assassin plays right there.”

The Cavs are now in the unenviable position of being one game away from elimination while having to win four straight to win the championship. No team in NBA history has successfully emerged to win in the playoffs after trailing 3-0.

Legendary St. Louis Cardinals second baseman Red Schoendienst died yesterday at 95 years old. His passing was announced to a crowd of 40,109 at Busch Stadium during yesterday’s Cardinals vs. Miami Marlins game. The scoreboard tribute that accompanied the announcement inspired a standing ovation from players and crowd alike. MLB.com quotes Cardinals principal owner and CEO William O. DeWitt Jr. on the news:

"Red was one of the greatest Cardinals of all time, and a beloved member of the Cardinals organization for over six decades.”

“His influence on this organization cannot be overstated. Red was a great player, a great manager, and a wonderful mentor to countless players, coaches and members of the front office. He was also a fan favorite who connected with millions of Cardinals fans across multiple generations. He will be sorely missed."

Former NFL wide receiver Terrell Owens has said that he won’t attend his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, ESPN reports.

"While I am incredibly appreciative of this opportunity, I have made the decision to publicly decline my invitation to attend the induction ceremony in Canton," Owens said.

Owens has been a finalist candidate for induction the last three years, and has been critical of the board of selectors for not inducting him.

"We are disappointed but will respect Terrell's decision not to participate in the enshrinement," Hall of Fame president David Baker said in a statement. "While unprecedented, the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the nearly 5,000 volunteers and the entire community are committed to celebrating the excellence of the Class of 2018 that will kick off the NFL's 99th season."
