France Wins Second World Cup, Kerber and Djokovic Victorious at Wimbledon, Groenewegen and Degenkolb Win Stages on Tour de France, Dixon Wins Indy Race in Toronto and Stanley Cup-Winning Goalie Ray Emery Drowns

France won their second ever World Cup title yesterday with a 4-2 victory over Croatia at the 2018 FIFA World Cup final in Russia. The team are now one of six in the tournament’s history to have won the title more than once, after previously winning in 1998. FIFA.com quotes France’s team reporter Adrien Gingold on the victory:

“Tonight, the Croatian team played better football, but France were more efficient, perhaps even more intelligent. Les Bleus’ strength is exactly this: no matter who they faced, they found the solution to beat their adversaries, one by one. Without being brilliant today, they scored four goals, which gives an idea about France's level, and their coach’s one. Today, with his smart tactical set-up, Didier Deschamps won the duel with Dalic.”

On Saturday Belgium beat England 2-0 for the third place title.

Germany’s Angelique Kerber beat Serena Williams 6-3, 6-3 for the Wimbledon Women’s Singles title on Saturday. It would have been Williams eighth Wimbledon title and 24th Grand Slam title, a tie with the current record held by Margaret Court. Kerber is the first German woman to win the title since Steffi Graff in 1996.

For the Men’s Singles title on Sunday, Serbia’s Novak Djokovic swept South African Kevin Anderson 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (3), winning his fourth Wimbledon championship. ESPN quotes Djokovic, who hasn’t won a Grand Slam title in two years, on the win:

"There is no better place in the world to really be making a comeback," Djokovic said. "This is a sacred place for the world of tennis."

Today is the first Rest Day of the Tour de France. Over the weekend, however, Dutch rider Dylan Groenewegen scored a back-to-back win after taking stages seven and eight on Friday and Saturday respectively. Cycling News quotes Groenewegen on the feat:

"The legs are better every day,” Groenewegen said after the finish. “Today it was a fast final with a lot of corners but the team did an amazing job and my position was good and I saw Gaviria and Greipel were fighting for position. I saw the finish and thought ‘this is the moment.’ It was a hectic final, but that’s every day in the Tour.”

German rider John Degenkolb won stage nine yesterday.

IndyCar racer Scott Dixon won at the Honda Toronto Indy yesterday. It marks the third time the New Zealand-born racer has won the race.

Stanley Cup-winning goaltender Ray Emery drowned in Hamilton, Ontario after a “swimming accident” according to a report from the Associated Press. The Chicago Blackhawks, with whom Emery won the Cup in 2013, issued a statement regarding his passing:

“The Blackhawks will fondly remember Ray as a fierce competitor, a good teammate and a Stanley Cup champion.”

They produced their best performance of the tournament right when they needed it most, showing their deep reserves of strength with another victory from a game that went to 120 minutes. Despite a quick England goal just five minutes from the start, Zlatko Dalic's side turned it around. France, are you ready?

The men’s singles semi-finals will be tomorrow, where Spain’s Rafael Nadal will play Serbian Novak Djokovic and American John Isner will face off against South Africa’s Kevin Anderson.

The Telegraph reports that Irish cyclist Dan Martin has won stage six of the Tour de France. This is the second Tour de France stage Martin has won following a stage nine win in 2013.

In the Women’s Singles, Serena Williams will face German Julia Goerges on Thursday, and Latvian Jelena Ostapenko will square off against another German Angelique Kerber.

The AP reports that Peter Sagan has won the fifth stage of the Tour de France today, which is the race’s first hilly stage. This marks Sagan’s second victory of the race.
