Supreme Court Frees Up Gambling Laws, Lomachenko Sets Record and Wins Title, Capitals and Jets Lead Series in NHL and Cavs Lose First Game of Conference Finals

Stocks discussed: (NYSE:MSG)

The U.S. Supreme Court has struck down betting laws that were responsible for prohibiting sports gambling, according to a report on ESPN. This frees up states to open the market to betting on single game results, which was previously only an option in Nevada.

“States that want to offer legal sports betting may now do so, and New Jersey plans to be first. Delaware, Mississippi, New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia are among the states expected to quickly get into the legal bookmaking game.”

The move is opposed by the likes of the NFL, NCAA, NBA, NHL and MLB while being championed by former New Jersey governor Chris Christie on Twitter:

“A great day for the rights of states and their people to make their own decisions. New Jersey citizens wanted sports gambling and the federal Gov't had no right to tell them no. The Supreme Court agrees with us today. I am proud to have fought for the rights of the people of NJ.”

Vasiliy Lomachenko became the lightweight world champion after scoring a tenth-round technical knockout of Jorge Linares in Madison Square Garden (NYSE:MSG) on Saturday. ESPN reports that Lomachenko’s win set a new record:

“With the victory, Lomachenko shattered the all-time boxing record for fewest fights needed to win a world title in three weight divisions, accomplishing that in just his 12th fight.
Lomachenko broke the record held by Australian legend Jeff Fenech, a Hall of Famer who won world titles at bantamweight and junior featherweight before winning a belt at featherweight in his 20th fight in 1988.”
The Washington Capitals are dominating the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Conference Finals with two straight wins on Friday and Sunday of 4-2 and 6-2 respectively. It will be an uphill battle for the Lightning as the next game is Tuesday in Washington, giving the Capitals a home ice advantage. Meanwhile the Winnipeg Jets lead their series with the Las Vegas Golden Knights 1-0 after a 4-2 win on Saturday.

In basketball, the Boston Celtics beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 108-83 last night taking a lead in the East Conference finals. The Associated Press interviewed LeBron James on the Cavs loss:

“for me, there’s no level of concern no matter how bad I played tonight with seven turnovers, how inefficient I was shooting the ball. ... We have another opportunity to be better as a ballclub come Tuesday night and we’ll see what happens.””

Raptors Fire Head Coach, Jets Eliminate Predators and Nadal Breaks
McEnroe’s Record at Madrid Open

The Toronto Raptors have fired head coach
Dwane Casey after seven seasons. This comes after being swept in the
second-round of the playoffs for the second consecutive year by the Cleveland
Cavaliers. ESPN quotes Raptors president Masai Ujiri:

"After careful consideration, I have
decided this is a very difficult but necessary step the franchise must
take," said Raptors president Masai Ujiri via a statement. "As a
team, we are constantly trying to grow and improve in order to get to the next
level. We celebrate everything Dwane has done for the organization, we thank
him, and we wish him nothing but the best in the future. He was instrumental in
creating the identity and culture of who we are as a team, and we are so proud
of that."

Casey
had one year remaining on his contract with the Raptors, worth $6 million.
Casey was
recently voted “coach of the year” by the
National Basketball Coaches Association.

For
the first time in their franchise history, the Winnipeg Jets will play in the
conference finals after knocking out the Nashville Predators 5-1 in game 7 last
night. The Jets were the first to score midway through the first period,
following up with another goal
126 seconds later. The Jets held on to
victory despite goalie Connor Hellebuyck facing 21 shots in the third period
alone.

Rafael
Nadal won his 50th straight set on the same surface, clay, yesterday as he beat
Diego Schwartzman in the third round of the Madrid Open. This breaks the
previous record set by John McEnroe of 49 consecutive sets won on carpet in
1984. The
Associated Press quotes Nadal on the achievement:

“When my career is over, these are things
that are going to be there for always. It’s difficult to be able to win 50 sets
in a row,” Nadal said. “Well, it’s done. It’s over. Let’s not talk about that
anymore and let’s continue on what we have ahead which is what I am concerned
about.”

Serena Williams Withdraws from Italian Open, Mariners' Paxton Throws a No-Hitter and Raptors' Casey Voted Coach of the Year by Peers

The Associated Press reports that Serena Williams has withdrawn from the Italian Open next week. Williams, who will be replaced by Catherine Bellis for the tournament, "returned to the tour briefly this year after a 14-month absence to give birth to her daughter." The AP reports that Williams that this withdrawal, coupled with her withdrawal from the Madrid Open makes other matches uncertain:

"The 23-time Grand Slam champion also withdrew from this week's Madrid Open and sitting out Rome puts her status for the French Open, which starts May 27, in doubt.

Williams, a four-time Italian Open champion, has not played since her a first-round loss to Naomi Osaka in March at the Miami Open."

James Paxton, the Seattle Mariners' starting pitcher, threw a no-hitter in Toronto against the Blue Jays, becoming the first Canadian to do so on his native soil. Winning 5-0 and throwing just 99 pitches, NBC Sports quotes Paxton:

"Of all places, here in Toronto, it's pretty amazing. The fans were giving me some trouble in the seventh inning, but once I got past that they started kind of cheering me on. It was cool."

Toronto Raptors coach Dwane Casey has been voted coach of the year 2017-2018 by the National Basketball Coaches Association (NBCA). Introduced last year, the award is distinct from the league's coach of the year award, as Sportsnet reports:

"Not to be confused with the NBA's coach of the year award, this award is voted on by Casey's coaching peers and is separate from the official award, which is decided by selected members of the media."

#PlaybyPlay; #Raptors Eliminated, Capitals Finish Penguins and #MMA’s “Four Horsewomen” Reunited in #WWE

#PlaybyPlay; #Raptors Eliminated, Capitals Finish Penguins and #MMA’s “Four Horsewomen” Reunited in #WWE

Stocks discussed: (NYSE: $WWE), (TSX: $SCYB.V), (CSE: $ISOL.C), (NYSE: $NKE), (NasdaqGS: $DAKT)

Point Roberts, WA, Delta BC –May 8, 2018 - Investorideas.com, a leader in investor news and research issues today’s edition of Play by Play covering what’s new in sports headlines and recent news from publicly traded companies in the sector.

Raptors Eliminated, Capitals Finish Penguins and MMA’s “Four Horsewomen” Reunited in WWE

The Toronto Raptors found themselves defeated again by the Cleveland Cavaliers yesterday, losing 128-93. A piece in ESPN summed up the impact it may have on the Raptors:

“For the Raptors, it was a horrific end to a season in which they won 59 games and earned the No. 1 seed. The swagger from their bench and cohesion of stars Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan eroded by the game. The Cavs stole Game 1, they crushed the Raptors in Game 2, James broke their spirits in Game 3, and it was an embarrassment in Game 4.”

The Nashville Predators shut out the Winnipeg Jets 4-0 last night forcing a seventh game in the series. The winner of Thursday’s game in Nashville will go on to face the Vegas Golden Knights. The Washington Capitals eliminated the Pittsburgh Penguins yesterday and will go on to face the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Conference Finals.

WWE (NYSE:WWE) announced yesterday that all of the MMA’s Four Horsewomen have now made the move “from mixed martial arts to sports-entertainment”. Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir join Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler:

The WWE Universe no doubt remembers the Four Horsewomen’s standoff with Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch and Bayley — three-quarters of WWE’s Four Horsewomen, alongside Sasha Banks — at last year’s Mae Young Classic. Duke, Shafir and Rousey were there to support Baszler, who advanced to the final round of the inaugural tournament before losing to Kairi Sane. Though the Four Horsewomen factions did not come to blows at the Mae Young Classic, the exchange of words made for a stirring scene.
Since then, Baszler and Rousey’s impact in the squared circle been nothing less than immense: The Queen of Spades forcefully claimed the NXT Women’s Title from Ember Moon at NXT TakeOver: New Orleans, while “Rowdy” Ronda has emerged as one of Raw’s top Superstars following a spectacular in-ring debut at WrestleMania, where she teamed with Kurt Angle to defeat Triple H & Stephanie McMahon.
Scythian Biosciences Signs Agreement with Isodiol, NIKE Announces New Category VPs and Daktronics Announces New Products

Stocks discussed: (TSX:SCYB.V), (CSE:ISOL), (NYSE:NKE), (NasdaqGS:DAKT)

Scythian Biosciences Corp. (TSX:SCYB.V), a pre-clinical research and development company, signed an agreement for import and distribution with Isodiol International Inc. (CSE:ISOL), a market leader in pharmaceutical grade phytochemical compounds and an industry leader in the manufacturing and development of CBD consumer products, according to a recent press release.

NIKE, Inc. (NYSE:NKE) has announced Rosemary St. Clair as their new VP, GM of Global Women’s and Cesar Garcia becomes the new VP, GM of Global Running.

“St. Clair, a 31-year Nike veteran and experienced enterprise leader has held senior roles in North America, China and Emerging Markets including, most recently, VP, GM of Field Sports and Specialty North America and VP, GM China Running.
Garcia has been at Nike for over 17 years, most recently as VP, Merchandising, Global Running. His previous experience includes Running GM roles in both Japan and Western Europe.”
Daktronics, Inc. (NasdaqGS:DAKT) has announced new product advances geared toward the convenience store industry, including the new Fuel Price Data Kit.

#PlaybyPlay; Justify Wins Kentucky Derby, Lebron Secures Game 3 Win for Cavs, Golovkin Defeats Martirosyan, Sharks and Bruins Eliminated

#PlaybyPlay; Justify Wins Kentucky Derby, Lebron Secures Game 3 Win for Cavs, Golovkin Defeats Martirosyan, Sharks and Bruins Eliminated

Justify Wins Kentucky Derby, Lebron Secures Game 3 Win for Cavs, Golovkin Defeats Martirosyan, Sharks and Bruins Eliminated

Stocks Mentioned: (NasdaqGS:CHDN)

Favourite Justify won the 144th Kentucky Derby on Saturday at Churchill Downs (NasdaqGS:CHDN) in Louisville, Kentucky. Justify started the race strong with just one horse, Promises Fulfilled, ahead. The two were neck and neck until Justify overtook Promises Fulfilled going into the ¾ mile at the far turn, then proceeded to win a 2 ½ -length victory. The Kentucky Derby recap piece sums up the significance of Justify’s win:

“Justify became the first horse to win the Kentucky Derby without racing as a 2-year-old since Apollo in 1882. He made his debut Feb. 18 and only one other Derby winner broke his maiden at a later date: Brokers Tip when he won the Derby on May 6, 1933.
He also became the second horse in the past 100 years to win the Derby with only three career starts prior to the race, joining Big Brown in 2008.
Justify gave trainer Bob Baffert his fifth Kentucky Derby victory and jockey Mike Smith his second.”
LeBron James secured the game three win for the Cleveland Cavaliers over the Toronto Raptors on Saturday with a running one-handed bank shot at the buzzer. The Raptors are now facing three losses in the series with no wins. The Associated Press reports:

Game 4 is Monday night, and the odds are stacked against the rattled Raptors. Of the 129 teams in NBA history to fall behind 3-0, none has come back to win.

Cinco de Mayo would have given boxing fans more to celebrate if middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin had the rematch with Canelo Alvarez as originally planned; but Triple G did not disappoint. The main event on HBO, not a PPV event, gave fans two rounds of boxing, ending officially at one minute 53 seconds in the second round. The TKO of Vanes Martirosyan by Triple G was reminiscent of Gennadys’ previous fights before he entered the ring with the likes of Canelo. Golovkin, with his seek and destroy style, was always a fighter that that gave his fans a knockout that was sometimes vicious and reckless and usually early in the fight.  It was that reputation that made it difficult to get an opponent with a big draw name. In his previous fight with Canelo Alvarez that ended with a controversial draw, he fought a more technical fight matching and respecting the skillful style of his opponent but it was a brutal war nonetheless. Golovkin felt he had something to prove to the world of boxing that night and probably he like many boxing fans, thought he won the fight. Now boxing fans will be anticipating perhaps a different boxing event  for the rematch with Canelo as the middleweight champ still holds his title and did it his way.

On Sunday both the San Jose Sharks and the Boston Bruins were eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Sharks were shut out in their game six matchup against the Las Vegas Golden Knights and the Bruins suffered a 3-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Tonight the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals face off, with the Pens leading the series 3-2, and the Winnipeg Jets and the Nashville Predators play their sixth game with the Jets leading 3-2.
