Capitals Tie Series, Zidane Leaves Real Madrid and Jamaican Olympic Gold Medal Appeal Refused by Court of Arbitration

The Washington Capitals tied up the Stanley Cup finals series with the Las Vegas Golden Knights last night. With their 3-2 victory, the Capitals can attribute their win to centre Lars Eller, who scored three points (one goal and two assists), and goalie Braden Holtby, who made an astonishing 37 saves. NHL.com quotes Golden Knights centre Erik Haula on his team’s loss:

"Nobody said it's going to be a 4-0 series. It's going to be ups and downs. We've been here before. We've been good on the road. Just put this behind, learn from your mistakes, just try to do things better, and that's it."

Zinedine Zidane announced yesterday that he was leaving Real Madrid as coach. This comes just a week after he led the team to its third consecutive Champions League trophy. The AP quotes Zidane on his decision.

“You have to know when to quit,” said the 45-year-old Zidane, who was Madrid’s coach for two and half seasons. “This is the right moment. I am a winner and if I don’t see it clearly that we will keep winning, it’s time for a change.”

The BBC reports that the Court for Arbitration of Sport (CAS) has refused Jamaican sprinter Nesta Carter’s appeal against stripping him and his team, including Usain Bolt, of their 2008 Olympic Gold Medal. A doping test result from Carter surfaced in January 2017 testing positive for banned stimulant.

#PlaybyPlay; #Cavs and #Warriors in #NBA Finals for Fourth Year in a Row, Vegas Takes Game 1 Against Capitals, Power Wins #Indy500 and Serena Williams Wins Grand Slam Match

Cavs and Warriors in NBA Finals for Fourth Year in a Row, Vegas Takes Game 1 Against Capitals, Power Wins Indy 500 and Serena Williams Wins Grand Slam Match

The Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors advance to the NBA Finals after playing two games over the Memorial Day weekend. Despite being down two games to the Celtics after Thursday, the Cavs came back with a 109-99 win in Cleveland on Friday, then finished the series with a 87-79 win in Boston on Sunday. The Warriors similarly came back from a two-game deficit with a 115-86 home game win on Saturday, followed by a 101-92 victory last night in Houston.

This means that for the fourth straight year, the Warriors and the Cavs will face off in the NBA finals. The first game of the series is on Thursday in Oakland.

The Golden Knights won the first game of the Stanley Cup finals in Vegas against the Washington Capitals. A back-and-forth game followed Vegas’ thrilling and comically over-the-top opening ceremony, and saw the lead change four times resulting in a 6-4 win for the Golden Knights. NHL.com quotes Vegas defenceman Nate Schmidt on the rollercoaster match:

"A lot of times you feel like the game is going in one direction, and then they score and we score. A lot of emotion. You've just got to make sure you keep it in check. It was a pretty emotional game for everybody.”

IndyCar driver Will Power won the Indianapolis 500 for Team Penske, completing the race in just under three minutes. Indy500 quotes an ecstatic Power on his win:

“I was wondering if I was ever going to win it, and thoughts went through my mind during the month like that. In my career, I’ve had so many wins, so many poles. But everyone always talks about the ‘500.’ And I won it. I just couldn’t imagine winning a race in front of crowd like this, this many people. It’s just amazing. What an event. I love it.”

Veteran driver Danica Patrick’s career-closing race at the Indy 500 ended with her crash on Lap 58, earning her 30th place.

The Associated Press reports that Serena Williams has “won her first Grand Slam match as a mother”, beating Kristyna Pliskova of the Czech Republic 7-6 (4), 6-4 at the French Open today.

#PlaybyPlay; Rockets Take Series Lead, Danica Patrick Prepares for Final Race on Sunday’s #Indy500 and #Trump Pardons Boxer Jack Johnson

Rockets Take Series Lead, Danica Patrick Prepares for Final Race on Sunday’s Indy 500 and Trump Pardons Boxer Jack Johnson

The Houston Rockets scored a close victory over the Golden State Warriors last night, winning 98-94 in Houston. This gives the Rockets a 3-2 lead in the series meaning they could take the Western Conference and head to the finals if the Warriors lose Game 6 on Saturday.

The Rockets will be without point guard Chris Paul on Saturday, as it was reported he won’t be able to play due to a hamstring injury. ESPN reports that Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni will start Eric Gordon in his place, saying: "It will not change anything we do and how we do it."

The Indianapolis 500 takes place on Sunday, and will be Danica Patrick’s final professional race as a full-time competitor. Despite this, Patrick told USA Today that she won’t let it get to her and will treat it like a normal race.

“It’s not like I’m going to try harder, it’s not like I’m going to drive scared. I’m just going to drive like I normally drive; whatever happens, happens.”

Patrick last raced in the Indy 500 in 2011, and set the record for female drivers in coming third in 2009.

The Associated Press reports that President Donald Trump pardoned late boxer Jack Johnson more than a century after he was convicted, for what many attribute to racist reasons. Johnson was the first black heavyweight champion, but “was convicted in 1913 by an all-white jury for violating the Mann Act for traveling with his white girlfriend. That law made it illegal to transport women across state lines for “immoral” purposes.””

Trump tweeted in April that Sylvester Stallone had brought Johnson’s story to his attention, and that he was “considering a full pardon”.

“I am taking this very righteous step, I believe, to correct a wrong that occurred in our history and to honor a truly legendary boxing champion,” Trump said Thursday during an Oval Office ceremony.
